UK Census 2021

Did you know there will be a Census in March (Sunday 21/03/2021)? It will be primarily digital (you can get paper copies of forms on request) If you did/did not know does it bother you and why?

fail to see how anyone can object to filling out a census , it's a useful tool for government planning and of course hasm't been misused in the past. I had my forms through the post with instructions how to do it on line if I wished , which I did. It seems to me that the country is getting paranoid , you can't move without coming across conspiracy theorists.

I agree, BrianJ ..... and the problem is, that those who manage to evade completing the census will be the ones who are most vocal in their complaints when local services such as schools, GP surgeries, buses, trains etc are lacking in their area. It's the same with people who can't be bothered to vote and yet complain to all and sundry if the party in power are not doing as they wish! Rant over and time for a coffee 🙂

I'm surprised by the comments I'm seeing on Facebook regarding the census. How people aren't going to fill it in and believing it's going to be used for marketing. I imagine they'd be the ones complaining in future years about inadequate school places and other services.

This time the census can be completed online, which should suit the vast majority of the population, those that don't do the internet have a clearly stated option to complete a paper version.
I think the ability to complete online earlier than the 21st is to and try and prevent the system from crashing on the day, something they would be highly criticised for with no doubt hindsight suggestions of why didn't they let people complete over a wider time frame.

The census has been taken since 1801 every 10 years, illiteracy has meant many could not complete it themselves but with assistance from others the job was done. I'm sure we can get it done this time.

Completing the census is a legal requirement and you can be fined £1000 for not doing so. It would be interesting to know how this is going to be monitored because although each property has an access code to complete the form on line, how do they know how many people actually live in each house. I suppose they can check the electoral roll but not everyone registers for a vote (until they think that their party might lose!) and of course, under 18s aren't on the roll. Also illegal immigrants and homeless people will not be included.
It hadn't occurred to me that the site might crash on the 21st so I shall now complete my on-line form and keep my fingers crossed that my circumstances do not change 🙂

In this morning's post I have received my household identification letter for completing the census online. The letter says that it will take 10 minutes per person to complete - pity those households with lots of occupants! The letter also says that I can complete the census before 21st March and submit it but if my circumstances change before that date, I can let them know - bit difficult if you are a sole occupant ........ and have popped your clogs!!! 🙂

I had a fleeting thought that it might be due, last year. It's an interesting and useful tool for genealogists, historians etc. I'm having great fun, excitement and surprises doing the family trees for my family and friends.
What I didn't know was the "do it online" idea. That, for us, is brilliant. But what about those without internet access? There will be many who don't and want their paper form.
Will there be a question like, " Have you lost a family member to Covid19? "That would be a very interesting question for future generations.

Sorry have not replied previously, it appears that the notes telling me people had replied went into my spam folder.
I don't mind taking part but I'm concerned about the timing (mid Pandemic), the fact that there's been so little publicity .
I'm concerned about the digital aspect too, even though there is an even less publicised paper option.
Genealogy, I prefer someone else to do the work then tell me who I am related to.

I had heard that it was coming, and like CaroleAH I will find it interesting to see the how the population has moved and changed. From the 1951 one I was able to trace lost cousins and their children after being out of the country and losing touch for some years. It can be useful.

No, I hadn't realised that it was ten years since the last one. I am happy to take part and, as an amateur, genealogist, I find the information really helpful. The 1921 census will be published in 2022 so that will be interesting.
