What veg plants should I get for October?

I have a small strip for veg. Just cleared out all the finished tomato and runner bean plants, so now want to buy new plants to refill. Quick growing would be good as I have no patience. The plot is roughly 8' x 3'. Thank you.

you can put in Garlic and also Broad Beans,
if you put Broad Beans in over winter they wont get the black fly as much.

Thank you for your reply, both of those sound excellent. Can I buy garlic plants? Sorry to sound stupid, but does garlic grow underground?

You can also plant garlic cloves over winter. Mine did really well last year. Also planted onions and broad beans.

My friend grew Garlic just from a bulb brought in the fruit and veg department at the supermarket. I tried this and failed completely. Now she is over run with it and I am still having to pop up the shop everytime. I Must have another bash.

Why not try red onions as well as the more traditional type. I successfully grew some last time around along with the garlic. I don't have a lot of patience either but you can just leave them in and they do the rest. There are plenty of varieties to choose from.
Consider growing them in pots or tubs. In this way you don't have as many weeds or insects to worry about.

only veg i can think off is winter onions , broad beans , you could try asking down any local allotments ? , some gardeners will have excess plants left over ready for going in their plots ?
some areas also have community garden projects ? you might find one they can be quite helpfull
we have one locally 2hrs twice a week , they give what they grow away usually to the helpers and they do have a free tea break its the size off 6 allotments and based on a councill allotment site .
sucess with your plot

How about potatoes gill. We seem to plant them in any season and get a small ongoing crop of them apart from the middle of the winter obviously

Sounds like you need some advice from our Gardening Editor, Peter Mills, on this. If you leave your question for him under his latest Gardening feature, he should respond to you when he reads it. Here is the link to his September Gardening page: https://www.silversurfers.com/lifestyle/garden/peters-gardening-tips-for-september/

There is a section on what to do in the vegetable garden now, so that may help you too 🙂

In the meantime you may also get some answers from some fellow green-fingered Silversurfers here too 🙂
