Walking round the British Isles

Hi I am new to this website but wondered if anyone has ideas or interest in walking long distances over time? I dreamt a dream of walking round the British Isles one night and have never forgotten it! I have read a book of a lady and her dog who walked round our whole coastline - diverting across the scottish borders. It took her a while but she did it and for charity too. She had a relay of people who drove a motorhome that she purchased (leaky and damp!) but she eventually made it. I know she is not the only one who has. As a starting point I figured it may be best to do some long walks first and in ten days am walking the South Downs Way on an organised walk. I do walk a lot but just not over 10-12 miles a day so should be great weather permitting! Does anyone have any experience of long distance coastal walks? Would anyone be interested or crazy enough to walk/drive some of the way?! By the way I am 60. Rebecca

I have done the Lakes, West Highland Way, Snowdon, Peddars Way.......and beautiful they are to in the right weather. But its possible to fly in and out of Spain for around £25 each way and the season for walking is longer, weather better and its all very reasonably priced. The local people are charming, The scenery and history are equally impressive as ours. The Camino walks stretch back at least a millennium and our ancestors took time out to do them as well. The people doing it now are from all walks of life and consist of every nationality of the world. Not trying to put anyone of walking the UK but its well worth having a read up on these beautiful walks.
If anyone is interested I can also recommend a number of other long distance walks (many in English speaking nations) but they are a bit further afield?

Regrettably I thought the item was walking round the British Isles but maybe the British Isles have moved.
We have walked in the Shetland Isles, where I got sun burnt, Sutherland to look at Cape Wroth even the channel Islands where there is just the sea, unfortunately they have not moved Spain nearer to us, only their people.

I started walking when I was in my 40's after reading a book at an outdoor shop whilst kiting up my son for his DOE. Some 20 years later I now prefer to go where its warm and dry and so tend to shun the UK. As an aside have you ever contemplated the Camno walks in Spain- - I have done one for the last 3 years by myself and can thoroughly reccomend it.

hi Rebecca

funny enough I was thinking I would quite like to walk Hadriens Wall. that might be a good starting point. I don't mind joining you
on some shorter walks around these isles.

Hi Frida!
I am not sure when I will be going still in the planning stage but I too get excited thinking about it for myself! There is a great book written by a girl in her 20's who completed the walk with her dog called 'Two Feet 4 Paws'. I wish you every success with all your walks and travels. Rebecca

Hi

I shall take a look at the book- thanks.

Realistically, I probably will not start my travels until the end of the year but have been planning for sometime. Although enjoyable, trying to work out the best way around the world and the most cost effective can get quite frustrating.

I am in the process of changing many other areas of my life, some of which need to happen before I can start my exploration.

Good luck with your planning!

Frida

Hi Rebecca

I got very excited when I read your post. This is a long standing dream of mine . I had thought about travelling by camper van but I think staying in YHA accommodation is probably a really good way of travelling around the coastline.

YHA has upgraded most of the accommodation and you can book in to a private room . I am not quite ready to make this journey yet , as I have other places to see but this is definitely something I would like to do in a few years. I would like to do it all in one long trip .

I wish you good luck with your trip , it sounds fantastic! We certainly have a beautiful Island.

Walking round the British Isles must be a long long way. Might be interested in a shorter distance.

I too know people who have attempted it. One couple has done most of it by now but has suspended operations for the time being due to an injury.

Their method too is a camper van but they use public transport to return to the van at the end of a day's walk.

Thanks Keith. The public transport option is helpful to know.

Hi John
The west highland way sounds like a great walk. How much of it did you walk? Rebecca
