Where is everyone retiring to?

We've been researching where to retire, and it gets confusing. I was wondering where others have found to be the best place to retire? Safe, inexpensive, low cost of living, close healthcare facilities.

Hi AngelRose

Being married to an ex forces chap, we have moved around a lot and do not have a network of friends around us to see us into our dotage... We live in Norfolk, and our families are dotted around the country, Wales, Wirral, Norfolk etc.

I have recently been looking at Wales and the North West, mainly because mum is there and getting older.... We could also sell our house and buy outright, so we would be able to reduce our working hours going forward until retirement.

We get a lot of Southerners move up to Norfolk, two of our neighbours are from Kent and Essex....

I guess it depends on your reasons for wanting to move...?

I retired to the Welsh Border town of Chepstow a couple of years ago after living and working in Birmingham for many years. I chose to move away from my home town because after 20 years employed in public service I was too aware of what went on in my area!

I love living here, I feel safe at home and whilst out. I like the fact that I can either walk into our quaint little town or walk the dogs along part of Offa's Dyke, which is on my doorstep.

Shopaholics have to travel farther afield to the large departmental stores and the nearest hospitals are either in Newport or Gloucester, so such things have to be considered, particularly as we get older and may require the services of the NHS more often!

I find the locals are far friendlier here than in the cities and dare I say it, even some of the teenagers smile...so all in all I'm happy that I made the move.

I find it confusing why anyone would want to go anywhere to retire.
We retired into our own home, we had had a mortgage which we paid off, many years ago so it is not expensive to live here, in fact you could say it is rent free.
Low cost of living, we live near four small towns, including our own, all within a short .
bus ride, with markets and supermarkets so that helps to keep the cost of living down.
We know a lot of the people who live near us, very important.

We are very happy people without having to move.
