Writing and publishing books

I have written, in some form, all my life...travel articles (not very well paid), poems (unsold), a long saga novel (refused by many publishers), academic essays, (completely unpaid) translations from Italian and French (paid in kind by hotels and restaurants) and FINALLY I retired and returned to live in England and began to write books that actually sell. I now give creative writing courses in Cambridge and Norwich (almost unpaid) and recently online only.

I have two bylines often attached to my pen name Kate Fitzroy

1 'escape with a book'

2 Everyone has a book to write.

I shall end with a quote from P.G. Wodehouse "I know I was writing stories when I was five. I don't know what I did before that. Just loafed, I suppose."

I'm a published author, both through traditional publishing houses and by self-publishing. There are all kinds of difficulties getting published. In my true story that was traditionally published, the publisher raped it. So years later I rewrote it and self-published it. After writing and publishing twelve books I am now seeking an agent again. I'd given up on that. But this book is too important to me to let languish.

Thank you, Sally,

I do have a question about following a thread. The entries are not in date order. Is there a way to fix that?

I have written a few books and published them on Amazon, Kindle self publishing. They just have to approve them and in about 1 day, your books are automatically published online. They are digital ebooks people can purchase and read on a kindle device, or on their computer or a smart phone. And you can publish paperback books too that other people can order online. It is practically free. You get a royalty of 35% of any sales. I published a book recently on Kindle about Paranology. I write non-fiction articles about unexplained phenomena.

It seems like a lot of writers end up in academic careers. Wish I could say that. All my books and short stories were rejected and I accepted my life in the blue collar world. Maybe when I retire in a few years I can take it up again. Maybe I will write something that will finally get published. I started a new forum category called writer's support group where people might give advice, read and critique each others work and provide general support and encouragement. Want to join?

The life of a writer is often overlooked and underpaid. While I have been published, only I would remember it. So, I turned to education as well. Now, I teach classical literature and college preparatory writing. Education brings me as much pleasure as being published. The payoff is two fold because I receive joy for the mere act of teaching others, and the students receive an education for which they may learn and pass their knowledge on to others.
