Dogs are more popular than cats for the first time in over 20-years!

For more than 20-years cats have ruled the roost in British homes significantly outnumbering dogs in the quest to become the country’s most popular pet.

But now the latest figures have revealed how the humble hound is top dog once again, with almost a quarter of households in the UK now giving a home to one of man’s best friends.

Statistics published by Dogs Trust Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) reveal that there are now 8.9 million dogs living in Britain compared to just 7.9 million cats.

So do you have a preference in your home?

Sorry, I forgot to add this that I heard many years ago - When you call a dog, it comes to you. When you call a cat, it leaves a message and gets back to you.

Having lived with dogs and cats over the years, I love them both equally. Each give so much love, loyalty and joy in so many ways.

Dogs are slaves
At your command.
They squirm and roll,
They lick your hand.

Dogs die of love
If you should leave –
Refuse to eat
And whine and grieve.

Dogs only ask
To be thrown sticks,
Ingratiating
With their tricks.

Man’s fragile self
Loves sycophants,
And how well dogs
This self enhance.

But take a cat –
A slave to none,
A haughty
Enigmatic one.

You give, it takes,
Secure in grace –
And in my heart
A special place.

Cats don't mind if you don't fancy going for a walk if the weather is cold wet or windy, they are quite happy to go out alone or if the weather is really bad, and of course if one is available to them .to use their own private facilities. I like dogs as well and have had 3 over the years but cats are for me evertime

where do they do their toileting, not in your garden, I am guessing. We have all and sundry of the neighbourhood using our garden as a toilet. Really makes me angry.

I love both cats and dogs and until 21 December 2014 I was fortunate to have both. Sadly my beautiful cat went missing that day and I haven't seen him since. It was a rotten Xmas and I miss him so much. He had been a loyal friend for over 11 years, and even moved 200 miles with me 5 years ago. If someone has taken him in I hope they look after him...but I would love him to come home. He is chipped.

All animals are beautiful and whatever animal you have has to be part of the family otherwise its not worth having animals. We have a miniature schnauzer, 6 months old and she gives us so much fun and love, along with excercise. A reason to wake up every morning.

All animals are wonderful. I've had cats and dogs. My cat Nigel lived till he was 22 - he was such a character. Now I have two dogs - we have so much fun with them. Having a pet completes the family and makes a home a home.

Having had Dogs for the past 40+ years they have given so much joy for the whole family, the house is empty when he is not there!

The joy of walking and exercise meeting like minded people is great in fact I thought of calling one of the dogs Gym as he was my exercise come rain sleet or snow but nicer when the sun is out or on bright cold hard days.

They respond to your moods and I think they speak volumes to us and the great thing is I can tell him all my secrets and he never says a word, truly mans best friend, but they are only as good as there owners

Love my dog to bits. He's a 5-year old chocolate lab, and is as adorable now as he was as a puppy. He is a friend, protector, joker and loves us as much as we love him. I have never owned a cat, as we have always kept a dog, and therefore have no experience of them only friends or family owned cats. Our dog keeps us ever so active and he is good for our health and souls. A true companion to us, wheras cats are far more independent......I'm truly a dog person. Love them!

I have 2 cats, Katy and Molly. My oldest cat Kieran had to be put to sleep 3 years ago, I do so miss him and my heart breaks when thinking about him. Katy is a chocolate Tortoise and 6 years old, and Molly is a grey Tortoise. 4 years old. They are my children and I love them so, so much. I love dogs as well but neither my wife or I can walk walk for long distances so it would be be wrong for us to own a dog.

Dogs for sure as they are more intelligent and I think friendly. We have had 3 German Pointers and now have a French Bulldog as well. Great fun...the walks on rainy winter mornings can be a pain but it keeps us fit in our 50s!
