Do you call him Santa Claus or Father Christmas?

I am unsure when Father Christmas changed his name, but as a child, I don’t remember him being referred to as Santa Claus.

Is what you prefer to call him a regional thing or a family tradition? One thing everyone agrees is that he travels through the sky on a sledge that is pulled by reindeer, that he comes into houses down the chimney at night and places presents for the children in socks or pillow-cases by their beds, in front of the family Christmas tree, or by the fireplace.

Some people say he lives at the North Pole in a country called Lapland.

Images of Father Christmas or Santa became very popular, with artists drawing him in his red and white costume from 1900 to 1930. So we have all grown up with his image in our minds.

It won’t be long now till he pays his annual visit to those girls and boys who have been good this year, so when you are talking about him to the younger members of your family, what do you call him?

Do you call him Santa Claus or Father Christmas?

I think both names are acceptable, I prefer Father Christmas but as long as we enjoy the Christmas spirit what's in a name?

As calling him Santa is more an American tradition than ours I think it's because our youngsters spend so much time watching those awful American programmes on TV.No offense intended to our American cousins of course LOL

According to William Hanson, a (probably self-styled!) etiquette expert, it is the middle classes and upwards who call this person Father Christmas and the lower classes who call him Santa Claus ......... and the National Trust are encouraging all their staff to refer to him as Father Christmas but Santa's Grotto is evidently okay! So according to today's poll, 72% of Silversurfers are middle to upper class - the world has gone mad 🙂

ALL children, including so called "Upper Classes", called him Father Christmas until AmericanISM invaded our country and especially our TVs.
My children, now in their 40s, and my Grandchildren, who know that we are personal friends of the big man, call him Father Christmas.
Next thing, we will all be flying the Ammerican flag

Being born a Jew, and raised that way, I've needed to leave all this stuff to my dear wife when a family Christmas was upon us. Entering Christianity in my middle teens Father Christmas wasn't then a part of my life and hasn't been since.

But now step grand daughter is a girl about town and a step great grand child is probably on the near horizon.

I guess tonight it will be Father Christmas for her child and I will follow suit. I still don't understand a word of the myth and probably won't now.

But for the family ... I'll go along with it.

It was always Father Christmas for me. My mom used to tell me he came in a large black taxi in the dead of night ( from Lewis’s department store of all things). The funny thing was I still put a carrot and mince pie out. Maybe the driver was a reindeer. Wish mom was still alive so I could ask her.

Interchangeable in our house although it was always Santa's fairies who sat on the light-shade watching to see if the children had been good enough to receive any presents! 🙂 Santa Claus is derived from St. Nicholas who gave gifts on 6th December but I believe that tradition was changed after the Reformation and the day was moved away from St Nicholas' feast day to Christmas Eve. Is Father Christmas an American invention - think I need to Google it!
