Do you drink a cup of coffee every day?

Coffee 'could make you live longer', major studies show

Coffee is one of the world’s most commonly consumed beverages, and Britons now drink 55 million cups a day according to the British Coffee Association.

It has become a national pastime and our passion for drinking coffee could be having unexpected health benefits and even increasing our lifespan by up to nine minutes a day, new research suggests.

Two new studies, including the largest ever conducted into coffee drinking, have found that drinking even a single cup a day reduces the risk of dying early from any cause, and dramatically cuts the chance of death from digestive problems.

People who consumed just one 350ml cup each day slashed their risk of dying early by 12 per cent over 16 years, while three cups reduced the risk by 18 per cent.

“If you like to drink coffee, drink up. If you’re not a coffee drinker, then you need to consider if you should start,” said Dr Veronica Setiawan, associate professor of preventative medicine at USC.

“Coffee contains a lot of antioxidants and phenolic compounds that play an important role in cancer prevention.”

What are your views on this latest research?  Are you a big coffee drinker? Does this inspire you to drink more coffee? Do you take notice of research or do you follow your own instinct?

I drink at least one cup of coffee every day - although I start the day with tea I really look forward to my mid morning coffee, usually taken with a group of friends. I think the research just confirms that coffee is good for you but, like everything else, only in moderation - perhaps like alcohol too much could be detrimental?
Is it also a myth that black coffee late at night will keep you awake?

My norm is 2 mugs of freshly ground black coffee (can't abide milk) every morning then after that I drink water with maybe a redbush tea in the afternoon. Occasionally have an extra mug of coffee and I don't seem to suffer any effects. On holiday I possibly drink about the same amount but tend to drink it at all times of the day but without any negative effects

Enjoy a cup of coffee instant or fresh that will upset the perfectionists by saying I enjoy instant.

I don't drink coffee at all, apart from not liking the taste it makes me tremble. I would rather not experience the taste or the unpleasant reaction.

I prefer a cup of Tetleys tea anyday. Coffee makes me feel a bit funny and if I have one after a meal at night I cannot sleep

I have two cups of strong coffee first thing in the morning, then switch to de-caff for the rest of the morning and after lunch it's always tea.
I'm wondering whether de-caff is as beneficial as caffeinated?
Are we believing this anyway, they'll be changing their minds in a flash so I think i'm going to stop worrying about it 🙂

I drink about 4 cups of coffee a week. On reading the posts about how many cups people seem to get through in a day, I decided to have three today.

At 12pm, my eye won't stop twitching, lips are quivering, doing a dance all by themselves, heart is pounding, singing in my ears and hands a slight tremor.
How is this good for you?
Experimentation on spiders fed coffee showed that out of LSD, alcohol and various other drugs, the spider fed coffee built the wackiest unfinished web out of all of them!
Should I drink more for medicinal purposes?............Nope!
I hope you dedicated coffee drinkers are double checking your webs!

Coffee wakes me up and gets me going. Nothing else does. And it is quite a weak mugful - just under half a teaspoon of black coffee. I wouldn't be able to give it up even if the facts had said the opposite,

Love my coffee and have always ignored the so-called experts as they change their minds more often than the weather changes. Have three cups a day but not Costa or Starbucks, they are so bitter!

I drink at least one or two each day. Reading all the "advice" given in various articles over the years, it could be good for swollen ankles ? bowel movement ? etc.,etc.,
Not sure about any of this, but what I am sure of, having lived on the continent for a lot of my life, the habit of coffee and a little something certainly puts a fresh complexion on matters [oh- and on your face] !!

I drink several cups a day, but can only drink weak coffee, so probably equal to two cups of strong coffee, or less. I'd never go to a coffee house because the coffee is always way too strong for me.

Many years ago I found de-caff gave me a violent headache.

These days I take a couple of cups in the morning, caffeinated of course, and drink something else for the remainder of the day.

I drink coffee occasionally, I find a lot of coffees are very bitter and I very nearly always have to take it with sugar. I do enjoy a cup of coffee made with hot milk at home, where I can regulate the amount of coffee that goes into the drink. As an everyday drink, it is not for me.

I gave up coffee about 2 years ago. My blood pressure was creeping upwards and I have found cutting down my caffeine intake an effective way of dealing with this. I missed it alot to start with but not so much now. I don't drink decaff as, to me, it just doesn't taste the same.

I just prefer coffee to tea and is my hot drink of choice. In summer I have cold drinks so maybe only a morning coffee. I do not feel any need of coffee per say or I wouldn`t be able to go through the day without in summer. I am fed up with "experts" telling us the benefits or otherwise of certain foods and drinks then doing a 360 a few years later!! Moderation in all things and a little treat every so often.

I usually have a mid-morning cup of instant coffee, but I don't 'need' a coffee or a caffeine fix. I must say I do get exasperated by all the research and findings these days. I recently read that coconut oil is not as beneficial as these so called scientists once said it was so I take all of this advice with a pinch of salt ... everything in moderation and a little bit of what I fancy when I fancy it. I won't be dictated to and have an abundance of common sense.

Marley444 I agree with all you said, we read too often that this is good for you and that is bad then all of a sudden the reverse is true!
I just eat and drink what I fancy and don't take any heed of what the so called experts say.
