Is it ever OK to eat dogs?

While in theory, it shouldn’t be worse to eat a dog than a rabbit, it is hard for us to overcome the social stigma we (in the West) associate with eating dogs. 

The consumption of dog meat in South Korea, where it is known as ‘Gaegogi’, has a long history originating during Three Kingdoms of Korea, AD C. 57. In recent years, it has been controversial both in South Korea and around the world, due to animal rights and sanitary concerns.

Simon Cowell has teamed up with the Humane Society International (HSI) to raise awareness about the brutal conditions and killings of the ‘kind, helpless and sweet’ dogs involved.

Yesterday there was a debate on Good Morning Britain between Antony Worrall Thompson, Chef, and Sara Damergi, TV presenter which explored both sides of the argument.

Antony has the view that our culture finds it acceptable to eat pigs and cows, so is this any worse than eating dogs? Eating Guinea pigs in Peru is considered a delicacy and cows are sacred to Hindus.

Simon Cowell has expressed his devastation at the brutal killings of ‘kind, helpless’ animals as he vows to stop the dog meat farming trade in South Korea and said ‘If everyone could come together now, through social media, through a different generation who just say no, enough people will listen. That’s what happens in the world today.’
