Will you set a New Year’s Resolution this year?

New Year’s resolutions are an annual tradition for some.

As we prepare to change our calendars from 2020 to 2021, many people are already thinking about their goals for the year ahead.

2020 has been a challenge for us all and being optimistic will help us achieve a much brighter year ahead.

Setting a resolution can be great motivation to try and improve ourselves – and no surprise, two of the most popular resolutions include losing weight and quitting smoking.

While it’s positive to set goals for ourselves, many of us feel the expectation of a New Year, New You is unrealistic and damaging.

After all, we don’t need to wait until a new calendar year to make goals and plans.

What do you think? Do you feel energised by the New Year or believe it’s a trap people fall into after the excess of the festive season? Will you set a New Year’s resolution?

Mine would be to all have a better 2021 than 2020. That's enough for now!

In my present situation as husband and carer for an MS patient, there's little point in setting goals. Something changes almost every morning, afternoon, or evening.

Frankly, I don't think I want the added disappointment of missing a personal goal. Better to take each day as it comes.

Thank you for your kind wishes Wilf; my wife and I most certainly hope for a better New Year for you and your family. Let's compare notes as the year progresses.

Yes, we are old friends in internet terms - I have an internet bride, so to speak, and now an internet old friend. I guess the net is coming of age! But I have enjoyed your company a very great deal, enjoyed the banter and perhaps most of all disagreeing like gentlemen, no rancour, nor hard feelings.

At the risk of igniting something with you, I'm breaking my rule of four years and lifting a glass of wine to Brexit.

From one man of convictions to another, here's to our next five years! Cheers mate.

Cheers Lionel and Happy New Year and let's hope 2021 is more pleasant. I agree with all you say and enjoy the freedom to be able to converse on sites like this and some of our national newspapers where I like to give my opinions! For better for worse, we are out of the EU. Time will tell. I don't think the man in the street will feel one dot of difference but at least we had the vote. Many people will look on in envy at the freedom we have in the UK.

Too right Lionel! New Years resolutions are like government policies, liable to change with little notice. With plans subject to change by people with agenda contrary to your own, I will try not to expect too much. However, Covid has brought into focus the possible fragility of life and the possibility of it shortening. Therefore I resolve to deny ourselves as little as possible while we can.

Mine is always not to set a New Years Resolution. I see no point in setting yourself goals you know you won't reach!

I tend to agree Jeanmark. Annually mine is to keep fit and look ahead to the year positively!
