Should a statue of Margaret Thatcher be erected in her home town?
Plans to install the £300,000 statue on a 10ft-high platform will be voted on this week amid fears it could become a “likely target for politically-motivated vandals”.
A statue of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher in her home town of Grantham will require a high plinth to curb the threat of vandalism, police said.
Members of the South Kesteven District Council’s Development Management Committee will vote on the proposals this week after the idea had 17 objections and seven people writing in support.
Plans to erect the statue in Westminster were rejected by Westminster Council last year with a report saying it could have attracted “potential vandalism and civil disorder”.

A plaque on the wall of the birthplace of Baroness Thatcher
Currently, the only marking of Baroness Thatcher in the Lincolnshire town is a plaque on the corner of North Parade and Broad Street to show where she was born.

It said: “The divisive nature of Baroness Thatcher due to her political career and policy legacy and the potential for this to result in vandalism has been raised as a concern.
“A threat assessment has been carried out by Lincolnshire Police who consider there is a possibility any public statue of Baroness Thatcher could be a target for politically motivated vandals.
“Lincolnshire Police’s Crime Prevention Officer has not objected to the proposal but they have recommended the statue is placed on a sufficiently high plinth and is sited in a location that benefits from good natural surveillance as well as lighting and CCTV.”
Letters in support of the statue said the location – at St Peter’s Hill in the Lincolnshire town – was suitable to “commemorate the first female Prime Minister”, while objections said Baroness Thatcher was a “divisive figure to due to political career and policies”.

Split, as the UK has become there is no denying that the use of her handbag worked with the rowdy school boys in the House of Commons. [Well it did for a while ! ] But the naughty schoolboys cut the handles off her bag, so she could no longer chastise them.
I'm a Merseysider, born in Liverpool & although no longer living in my home town, still resident in the county.
How that woman decimated the North West and how she sowed the seeds for this current harsh & uncaring regime... a statue should certainly not be erected in her honour.
Agree about London statue. In Parliament.
She was a Chamberlain type politician: peace in our time which was but months in which to arm for war. Thatcher trumpeted each of her 'rebates' from the EU which was actually her acceptance of 30 pieces of silver for each British industry she sold to the Germans. Steel, ship building, and coal are but a few that spring to mind. Everything we produced was too expensive. Within a short time German steel and South Korean ships were far more expensive than ours.
On the plus side she reined in the Unions in such a way that Downing Street recovered control from Stalinist Union chiefs. She gave the pound sterling credibility on world markets which gave us massive inward investment. The Falklands War? Necessary yes, popular yes, but later Tories slashed the military so it could never happen again.
In summary, no better and no worse than any other politician of her time. No case for a statue.
She was the first female PM in the whole of the Western world which is another factor making her worthy of a statue - but in Parliament.
Though what a waste of money to confine it to the the sea beg... best not construct it in the first place!
I rest my case!
In this light it is significant to remember it was arch Europhile Hesseltine who plunged the knife in her back.
Arthur Scargill let the miners down. He used them in his own political game and tried to bring the country to a standstill - well in fact he more or less did.
Would you suggest that he should have been allowed to continue like that.
Miners strikes had been going on for years when MT came to power. It took her determination to bring to an end a period of industrial misery and put Britain on a path to much great prosperity and stability. We were the 'sick man of Europe' and had to be bailed at by the IMF under Wilson.
Her state funeral was a disgusting waste of money ,so is this statue. On the plus side, Saddam Husseins statue was brought down, as was the Berlin Wall.!!! Why erect a statue when there is do much animosity surrounding it? Utter waste of money that could have been put to good use.
Progress is not always a good thing but you can't hold it back. Personally I would love to see the return of steam trains.
As for Brexit.... we’ll all I can say tknthat is the majority of people in this country who voted in the referendum clearly voted to leave and we WILL leave, whether it’s with or without a suitable deal, it will most definitely happen because we are a democratic country and we had a Democratic vote which favoured leaving.
People are individual and hey each have the gift of their own opinions and self expression but sadly, just like the extreme Muslim fundamentalists, they are being indoctrinated with information which is not correct and has been twisted into the type of information that the government and the new world order want to control them with. The irony of this us that if is those who voted Leave who know exactly what they are talking about and the real reasons why we need to leave the EU and nothing that myself or any other Leaver voted for has ever been based on a lie. Many of us were around before we joined the EU, which we did not want at the time and 40 years of corruption and lies have more than proved is right. How dare you or anyone else accuse me of other leavers of not knowing what we were voting for!! That is highly offensive.
Lady Thatcher was a strong leader - not everyone's cup of tea I admit - and definitely worthy of a statue to honour her. But alas, if it cannot be protected it will be vandalized by people with grudges. So in that respect it would be a waste of money. She made mistakes - as do all governments - but she also did a lot of good things too. Especially cutting the 'left wing' unions down to size, because if things had continued with them being so disruptive to industry, I dread to think of what the consequence would have been. They were far too powerful at the time, totally infiltrated by communists/extreme left wingers, and maybe the UK would have gone bankrupt. As for the Europhile Heseltine..... every time he opens his mouth he makes me feel ill.
HITLER was most definitely a Megalomaniac!! Margaret Thatcher was not.
Thatcher was an important worthy conservative politician who loved her country - I'm not saying she was right about everything but she got our country back on its feet and gave ordinary working class people the opportunities to makes their lives better through their own determination and sheer hard work
Hitler was not - he was a nobody who had never done an honest day's work in his life and was a political agitator (very much like Corbyn-Monoxide is today). He was nothing more than a loony socialist liberal agitator and later intolerant dictator whose goal in life was to murder every type of person he personally hated. He was not even German for goodness sake!!
Yes I am quite spirited when it comes to things I truly believe in and a megalomaniac is something Margaret Thatcher certainly was NOT!!
We are at a major crossroads in British politics and there are great opportunities for change, leaving the EU is a great place to start and banning trade unions altogether would be the next great step. We no longer have any type of a “socialist” party in the true meaning of the word, we live in a democratic society where everyone wants the chance to be equal - Mrs Thatcher provided us with that opportunity so moving forward the future of this country should be in the hands of the people and NOT at the mercy of a corrupt EU, trade unions or champagne socialists. We need to start looking after our own people and stop interfering in everyone elses’s business. Margaret Thatcher left Britain a great legacy and everyone needs to learn how to make the most of it for the good of our country and not for a load of corrupt hangers-on!!
There are enough idiots out there who will desecrate the statue just because they can! Most of said idiots probably don’t even understand who Margaret Thatcher was
If any one vandalises it then send them to prison.
I certainly would not want her in my town thank you very much.
My personal opinion is yes.
As a product of a Grantham childhood and schools (good schools), she stands as a tribute to her origins.
She divides opinions sharply but there is no denying her strength and ability in politics. She was respected internationally and raised Britains standing in the world.
She was the nasty medicine needed by the country when she came to power. No other post war politician did more for the country, we would be a lesser nation if she had not.
Her presence now in Brussels would be a godsend.
I will now retire to the bunker and wait for the rain of bombs.
