Should Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stick to tradition?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing for their wedding this weekend at Windsor Castle.

Their whirlwind romance has captured the hearts and minds of people all over the world, and many are looking forward to watching this happy occasion with family and friends.

The two are being hailed as a thoroughly modern couple; Meghan is confident and outspoken with an already established career as an actress.

Prince Harry is a passionate advocate for mental health and his initiative for veterans, the Invictus Games.

The two are bringing their fresh perspective to their wedding, too. They have broken from longstanding traditions within the Royal Family to make room for their own ideas.

Instead of serving the traditional fruit cake, the couple has chosen a lemon and elderflower cake, and will also have a gospel choir during their ceremony.

Many of the details of the wedding are yet to be revealed, but insiders say the couple is determined to do the wedding their way rather than based on old tradition.

What do you think – does this wedding represent a welcome change or should they honour and to stick to tradition?  Share your views at Speakers Corner

They will be working for the Queen as a couple and. Representing her abroad. So some serious things will have to be done. But a younger approach can only be good. As lots of Royals abroad are also younger. I think they will do well as they seem very approachable within reason. They are also very well liked that is obvious and will be an advantage.

They are a lovely couple and they won’t have the same pressure on them as William and Kate have, so I think they will have a lot more freedom to do what they want and I wish them all the luck in the world.

They should do as they think best for them. They are lovely together and should be left to get on with their lives

I wish them both happiness and health in their future together. It’s a beautiful day and I will be in front of my TV watching and toasting them with a glass of prosecco. This is England and our royal family. They represent us and do so in much style especially the younger royals. It gives us a chance to dress up and celebrate with them on a very special day. Without them this would be a poorer and less colourful country.

All the very best Prince Harry and Meghan. Enjoy your day and we will enjoy it with you...

You are quite right Poppy.

Great Britain has a great traditional way and that has interest worldwide.

I wish the couple much happiness.

They are a thoroughly modern couple, very much in love and while Harry is very loyal to the 'Firm', I don't think he will hesitate to do things his way. He is now 6th in line, so has more freedom than previously, and it would not surprise me to see him walk away from the whole set-up if his beloved wishes it. Let them be to find their way. I wish them all the luck in the world.

I wish them well,as I would for any couple embarking upon marriage. Beyond that, not interested. It’s only the media who are trying to drum up excitement. Most people I know don’t really care..

Alicia is totally right, this person will try the Diana Spencer system which failed, and will end up in the same situation

Well I believe she will follow the Kate Middleton system and succeed. Things have moved on from Diana Spencer days.

I do not agree Archie as I have said below I think she is a breath of fresh air for Royalty. Just what was needed.

I doubt if the marriage will last, Meghan is totally unsuitable to be joining the Royal family 🙁
I do not care what cake they have, money talks in that family!

Sorry Alicia, but why is she not suitable? I believe she is more than able to successfully stand at Prince Harry's side.

I disagree Alicia I think she is a brilliant addition to the Royal Family and just the breath of fresh air it needs. Harry is a genius and well liked. Megan is personable and hopefully will speak out for what she believes in.

She is eminently suitable. She is a distant cousin to Prince Harry via the Bowes- Lyon family. She has her own money, a line of fashion and is successful, is comfortable in her own skin and I don't think she will bow under undue pressure.
Maybe a good match after all.
As for the marriage lasting, who knows? It is all in the lap of the gods.

I hope they make it regardless of the strict protocols that have to be followed. Diana called the royals "the firm, " Megan is a brave girl to be entering this world but I feel sure Harry will help her enormously.
Maybe they would just love to run away to an island somewhere but as heir to the throne, he is restricted from doing what he wants.

They seem to be very much in love and I dearly hope she will be able to cope with the pressure and all that she will be tasked to do.
Every little girl dreams of meeting prince charming and becoming a princess.
I feel sure they will deal with the traditions and stick to royal protocols.

If they don't, heaven help them the Media will be all over them like a rash.
A lovely couple, I would love to see them make a success of their marriage.

Well, I'm a traditionalist. I see the value of tradition in keeping people together as one people. It's a kind of national identity. The Jewish people have used tradition as the glue to stick them together as Jews. Indeed, in the film Fiddler on the Roof (1971) there a song about tradition which has become so well known. We English are very similar.

I would like to think this youngish couple will make it, but I've grave doubts. The House of Windsor, in the last hundred odd years, has learned the hard way just how to survive. They generally reject modernists - Fergie and Diana to name but two - and I rather think a Hollywood actress with her role playing skills, will be their next victim.

I don't think Markle knows what she's letting herself in for. It might not be the Establishment who reject her, it might be the British people!

We wait to see. It won't take long.

Totally agree with you Jenninora.
The modern aspects they are bringing to their wedding reflect many of the aspects that are occurring amongst the public's arrangements for their weddings within recent years.
My son walked his sister down the aisle, there was no fruit cake, but there were vows and surely the commitment a couple make for each other is the most important thing?
AsJenninora says let young people do their own thing and be happy.

I think and I hope the couple have certain traditional aspects.
Prince Harry loves his Grandmother and as she is our respected Queen from the time of World War 2.

It is 2018 and it is the twenty first century and so much has changed and is different.
Our Queen, just as we Silversurfers has, witnessed so much change. Some of this change is good, some of this change is not good.

Change it is.
Modernity, whether we like it or not, is how the generation that includes the young Royals, like Prince Harry and his bride- to - be, live this modern life.

I do think Prince Harry will use his respect for the tradition of the Royal family with the capacity to be modern with different and young ideas.

I think he will.

It will be important that he live responsibily.

Using their wisdom of their upbringing and also experience of their future.

Let us leave them to choose each other and to choose the path.

Some of us will like how that path is trod, some of us will not like how the path is trod by them.

Let the young generation be!!

Well said Jenninora, I feel sure they will combine the traditional with the modern, if not, well, it is their wedding.
