Do you think Heinz should change the name of their Salad Cream?

Heinz Salad Cream could be renamed because people no longer use it on salads

Kraft Heinz is considering the name change after finding that just 14% of consumers use the sauce on salad.

Food giant Heinz is considering changing the name of its Salad Cream for the first time in 104 years to Sandwich Cream because few customers actually use it on salads.

Parent company Kraft Heinz said it was reviewing the brand’s name after research found that just 14% of consumers use it for its stated purpose.

The survey found it is viewed by consumers as an alternative to mayonnaise, and popularly paired with tuna, ham or cheese in sandwiches.

We are reviewing the brand’s name to reflect how the product is enjoyed by consumers every day

Joel Hughes, UK sauces brand build lead at Kraft Heinz, said: “We are reviewing the brand’s name to reflect how the product is enjoyed by consumers every day, and with the majority usage currently with sandwiches, we can confirm that ‘Sandwich Cream’ is one of the names being considered.

“There are consumers now who haven’t grown up with the brand in the household and just don’t know about the iconic zingy flavour, or what to eat it with.

“A decision on a name change is due to be made by September, although the much loved zingy salad cream will still be available to enjoy with exactly the same recipe.”

Launched in 1914, Salad Cream was the UK’s fifth biggest-selling table sauce last year, with value sales of £28.8 million, although that was a 5.4% decline on 2016, according to Nielsen.

Salad Cream fans were generally not happy with the move, taking to Twitter in droves.

Scott Buchan wrote: “Sandwich cream? Just because salad cream is not used on salads. I don’t put my tomato sauce on tomato’s either. Better change that name too.”

Charlotte Hardy claimed the new name has “too many syllables” and is “messing with tradition”, while minxlaura123 summed up her feelings with one word – “Noooooooo!”

Sarah wondered if this was “a slippery slope”, adding “Daddies sauce to become gender neutral next. Huge condiment confusion ahead”.

But Neil Johnson thought a name change would not make much difference and “it will always be known as Salad Cream, just like Marathons, Opal fruits and Jif”.

I’m sure people are aware salad cream can be used on sandwiches or anything else they choose to use it on

Well I use it on breaded fish so perhaps it should be called 'sandwich, fish and anything else you use it for cream.' On the other hand they could always leave it as the name we all know and we can use as we wish.

Love Salad cream always use it on my salads, prefer it to Mayo. I still regularly buy Heinz Sandwich Spread which all the family love, so why would we need a Sandwich Cream?

Ho hum!!....maybe sales are dropping off in favour of Mayonnaise?

Maybe a marketing ploy to make everyone look expectantly on the supermarket shelves for the new packaging...then why not reach out and pop one in your basket. Clever little imps they have working at Kraft (Krafty) /Heinz!!
After 104 years, in British hands, why now?

Maybe a ruse to change the ingredients for worse, in the name of cost saving?
A new label a new expectancy, psychological manipulation of the embattled consumer?.....Maybe?

Lets face it, Kraft have made an almighty ballsup in marketing . If their marketing department was anywhere near up to par they could have exploited this survey to their benefit without the expense of trying to re brand . But if you want to make your mark on them, go elsewhere, many shop brands taste the same and in some cases are actually the same from the same manufacturer just re labelled . Having worked in food manufacturing for years, believe me in many cases you are being duped by the label . Pretty packaging pays top profit .

Surely if Kraft/Heinz read these comments so far, it would be in no doubt whatsoever of the strength of public opinion.
But hey ! Do they worry about our opinions? Probably not, and the decision has all ready been made to make the change anyway.

Leave the name alone! Like others, Salad Cream has been used in my family for generations and Salad Cream can be used however and wherever anyone likes, it up to them. The name change would stop that. They should find something better to do with the money they will save from not renaming.

As well as leaving the name alone they should also put it back in glass bottles and get rid of the plastic ones.

The shape of the bottle is what makes the profit . The more of the produce you cannot get out means you have to buy more of the item . This is an old marketing ploy used by manufacturers for years and most consumers are totally ignorant of it.

I was brought up to add salad cream to salad. I then changed to mayonnaise after thinking I was 'more sophisticated' but a trip back to my home town and just one taste and I am now firmly back to using salad cream. I don't want Heinz to change the name but there are other brands.

I agree, salad cream is much tastier than mayo with a salad and it covers the salad better. Mayo just kind of sits there!

Why change the name of something everyone is familiar with just because of the manufacturers un researched perceived change of use.

Personally I use it on salads and on fish & chips, but have never put it in a sandwich.

I have never been asked how I use this product, so on what are Heinz basing their reason to change?

I suppose the next thing will be Breakfast Beans, because they think people only eat them with a full English!

Honestly, do they really think consumers are so dim witted that they can only use a product as it says on the label? Seems to me that the majority of current consumers have no problem in using it on their sandwiches even though the label says salad! Leave the name alone - or is this another ruse to increase the price? (New packaging, advertising etc) Hmmm now that I think about it that is the more likely reason.

It really is about the whole business of "Rebranding" and how it affects the general public, not just Heinz salad cream but other disasters such as the Post Office etc. etc . How much did it cost to rebrand Post Office ?
Please think about your own favourite brand of something which may be next for rebranding.

I still use Heinz Salad Cream on salads, on sandwiches, French fries and steaks medium rare, reading all this it would be quite simple minded to just use one particular bit in order to get a misunderstood name for a brand that everybody knows on the old fashioned name. I am a very old fashioned man, there have been too many name changes in the past year.

This has to be a joke? Heinz have been advised badly as its delicious as it is and why change the name. this smacks of other smart "brand" changes in the past the Post office to Consignea or some other rubbish that lasted about 5 minutes. Leave well alone I say the public love and know well Salad Cream.

Why do people have to change the name of items we have known for years? Does it make the salad cream taste any different? Of course not. The salad cream will always be salad cream to me I honestly believe it's to find someone a job (or justify the one he already has). Stupid, stupid, stupid. So - what's next?

This is just a clever PR stunt to generate some interest, discussion and 'online outrage' in a failing brand. I used to like it - especially in an egg sandwich but tried it recently and thought it was disgusting vinegary gloop! I'll be sticking to the Mayo!

I often wonder who it is that takes part in these surveys because it's never me or anyone I know. Just because people use it in sandwiches why does the name need changing. I use it on salad and in sandwiches. Why spend a fortune on rebranding an item that doesn't need it and consequently having to put the price up to cover costs!

"there are consumers now who haven't grown up with the brand in the household"
Are they refering to the citizens of Outer Mongolia ??
The survey in question was probably marketing gurus sitting round the table after an alcoholic lunch.
Presumably the oncosts of the change will be reflected in the increased price to consumers ??

didnt Heinz do a sandwich spread in a jar used to be with Heinz toast toppers in store and that didnt sell. I use mine on salads so to me it will always be a Salad Cream. I wonder how many people sat round a meeting room table, at Heinz, seriously discussing this subject.
What survey? What people, and how many people were asked? What was the question that was asked.? Seriously, do they imagine that this particular name change will see sales rocket.
If they really want to ‘engage’ young people, who apparently dont know how to use or eat it, would it not be better actually promoting it for healthy salads instead of sandwiches.
Perhaps this is just some stupid reverse psychology marketing ploy.
Salad cream ‘ain’t broke so it don’t need fixing.

Since its inception this pmrodict has been called salad cream and if other s are like me that is exactly what i used it for but nowadays i find i enjoy the taste mayonnaise much better. However i dont expect a firm to alter.the name of a product just because ive gone off it and many others have.started to use the more vinegary looking acompaniments which arenot creamy. As our tastes change firms many chage what they make but not the names just for the sake of it.

I can remember my mum putting salad cream in sandwiches and also had it mixed in with eggs to make egg sandwiches, I like mayonnaise as well, and use both in egg sandwiches depending on how I feel likewise with my salad I have to say I feel it is is more vinegary now to what I remember but taste changes as you get older..Why do they think changing the name will make any difference to sales, just another excuse to change the product and put the price up..
