Would you move into a retirement home?

Planning for end of life is a situation many people don’t consider until they are faced with caring for an ageing parent.

If you’ve ever had the experience of helping a loved one transition into a retirement living community or care home you know it’s a change that brings with it mixed feelings; some people embrace having extra help and support, while others equate care homes with a complete loss of independence.

Being in the position to choose for yourself can help make later life easier on both yourself and your family.

Some people wish to remain at home living independently for as long as possible, receiving extra support from family or a housekeeper or carer.

On the other hand, retirement homes needn’t represent the loss of independence – moving into a community can help prevent loneliness and isolation as we age and many people who live in these communities enjoy the best of both worlds. You can hand over tasks like cooking, cleaning and managing your household but still maintain control over your days.

What do you think? Would you move into a retirement home voluntarily? Or is this something you would rather avoid? Share your views at Speakers Corner.
