Would you try a Heinz tomato ketchup truffle?

Is chocolate and ketchup a step too far?

Have you ever thought of combining chocolate and tomato ketchup?

Heinz’s latest foray into ketchup recipe hybrids is in partnership with Fortnum & Mason’s confectioners.

The historic department store and food hall became Heinz’s first UK stockist in 1886, and they’ve already launched Ketchup Caviar together, so you can see where they’re coming from with this Valentine’s collaboration.

Heinz Tomato Truffles (Heinz/PA)

Alexandra Bayet, sauces marketing manager at Heinz, says: “Ketchup and chocolate are two of the nation’s most loved foods, and we felt it was only right that on the international day of love we combine these two ingredients, resulting in mouth-watering truffles that are set to delight ketchup and chocolate lovers across the country.”

But are ‘mouth-watering’ and ‘delight’ suitable descriptions…

How do they look?

Snug in a heart-shaped box – printed with the words: ‘Love at first bite’ – ostensibly, they look very much like truffles. There’s dark, white and milk chocolate spheres to choose from, each daubed with a little glittery pink food gloss. They also smell of chocolate – no ketchupy twang.

How do they taste?

Heinz Tomato Ketchup truffles - and a cup of tea (Ella Walker/PA)

The chocolate shells are filled with a thick orange goo just a squirt of ketchup. It’s creamy and very sweet, but not all that tomatoey. In fact, it’s only the aftertaste that carries the umami tang of proper red sauce. And the chocolate itself is decent.

Truffles are meant to be indulgent, decadent, comforting – not a minor culinary ordeal. But if you’re one of those people who put ketchup on everything, would you try one?

What are your views?  Would you be happy to sample one? Would you welcome a box on Valentine’s Day? Or does the very thought of them turn your stomach?

My husband said he would like them so I thought I might get a box for him. However when I saw that they were only available from a rather high class outlet at a price that was rather out of my price range I decided he will have to make do with usual favourite.

It's also occurred to me that there are already some accepted 'weird' combinations - balsamic vinegar on strawberries and one my friend's introduced me to - horseradish sauce on poached salmon; it's really delicious.

I'd give it a try, although I wouldn't have great expectations of it. Chocolate with chilli in is quite nice. I remember when flavoured vodkas were all the rage and I bought one with red pepper or chilli in thinking it would be nice with tomato juice for a Bloody Mary. It was foul, so foul that I brought it out at a party for everyone to have a little taste and the only person who could even stomach it, won the bottle.

This is as silly as I had some years ago, sardines and strawberry. Silly as a sport coup with tractor tires. I am a very old fashioned man, I eat the things as there were meant to be eaten and not wat mankind wants it changed into something quite silly just to make a name for oneself. Just be normal there you are silly enought.

Yes I would try one. Haven't tried peanut butter and marmite yet........ Hoping I might stay somewhere where it is on offer but I do put salt on peanut butter so I could try a slice of toast and marmite and add peanut butter.
I am not a lover of tomato sauce but love chocolate............. So if offered one Yes I would be intrigued to try it. Can always spit it out into a tissue if its too bad.

Ketchup sales must be declining, Billy. I wonder what will be on offer when condom sales decline.

Bleuch! The aftertaste would be gross I would think as tomato ketchup 'lingers'.
