Snap happy

While the quality of snaps from your mobile phone is becoming more and more impressive, a dedicated snapper will always be better. We’ve tested a multitude of compact cameras and selected the top five

Sony Cybershot RX100 II – £603 from amazon.co.uk

One of the enduring issues with digital snapping is that our images can stay on our storage cards forever, never to escape. But now, by adding more connectivity to compact cameras, like the NFC and WiFi on this latest Sony snapper, we’re more likely to share. This unit has a 20.2 megapixel sensor and decent 3.6x zoom plus a tiltable 3-inch rear display. Not cheap, but very cheerful.

Nikon Coolpix S02 – £119 parkcameras.com

With the footprint of a credit card, Nikon’s latest offering into the budget space of compact cameras is super-compact and pretty chic too. It boasts a decent megapixel count, shoots HD film footage and controlled by a customisable touch-screen. Small, sleek and suitably chic.

Samsung Galaxy camera – £305 from amazon.co.uk

By taking out the insides of their successful Galaxy smartphones and putting them on a compact camera Samsung have created an interesting crossover. A 16MP sensor and all the intelligence of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system combine to give top-notch shots, while the connectivity to social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram and Dropbox makes sharing (or simply showing off) your photographic efforts super easy.

Panasonic DMC-FT5 – £269.99 from wilkinson.co.uk

This hardy snapper is shockproof, freezeproof, waterproof to a depth of 43ft, dustproof enough for a moderate sandstorm and droppable from up to 6.6ft. So, for outdoorsy types, it’ll be your perfect extreme companion. For those simply looking to take some decent underwater footage on holiday without worrying about sand getting inside and spoiling your gadget, it’s a fine choice too.

Canon Powershot G16 – £499 from ukdigitalcameras.co.uk

This one has all the superior looks of a bulkier DSLR camera and will have anyone around you giving slightly envious glances. It has a solid all-round feature list, decent zoom performance and a 12.1 MP count. What sets this aside though is its ability to shoot continuously at speed and capture fast-moving action quite brilliantly.
