The Okavango Delta

Enjoy a sundowner like no other!

The Okavango delta begins life in the mountains of Angola, and from here it penetrates into northern Botswana. This however, is where the water flow falters and where the water disperses across the flat landscape, forming the Okavango Delta – Africa’s largest oasis.

The delta is the lifeline for an abundance of wildlife, including leopards, buffalos, lions, rhinos and a thriving population of elephants. There are also hippos; crocodiles; kudu and you may lucky enough to spot the endangered wild dog. Birdwatchers won’t be disappointed either as there is an impressive 450 species that frequent the area.

There are many ways to explore the delta, by foot, air, horseback, but the best way is by boat. This landscape is impossibly flat, and where the water has seeped across i t, it is quite often only 1 meter in depth – perfect for propelling traditional mokoros through the terrain. Mokoros are similar to that of a punt that you may find in the less wild city of Oxford – they use poles that push against the bed of the river to move the vessel through the water. This is a quiet and unobtrusive way to glide through the delta, making it perfect for game viewing.

Yes, the Okavango Delta has much to offer and the cherry on the cake is the effervescent light that is reflected off the water’s surface each evening. Enjoying sundowners in a mokoro is one of the real highlights of a trip to Botswana. One of the best times for game viewing is when the sun starts to sink and what better way to enjoy it than with a glass of bubbly in hand!
