Get on the bus: websites to help make travel easy
Bus travel is an easy and affordable way to get where you’re going without the stress of driving there yourself. In the UK, seniors over the age of 60 are entitled to free or discounted bus fares all over the country. Since the scheme came into effect it has had a positive impact on the lives of the over 60s and made it very easy to visit friends and family, as well as get out in the world if driving isn’t an option.
Finding the right bus schedule when you’re planning to travel close to home or further afield can be challenging, but with the help of the Internet it’s easier than ever to find a route and time that suits your schedule. We’ll share the best bus websites so you can plan your next adventure hassle free.
Planning your bus journey
Whether you’re travelling locally and need to find the fastest route or travelling further from home and simply looking for convenient bus times, there are several useful services online that make the job easy.
Start your search at Traveline. This website has been made specifically to link you to local public transport information so you can find timetables and route planners when you’re in a region you’re not familiar with and planning to take the bus.
Google Maps also offers a useful service where you can get directions using public transport – you simply need to add the start point and end destination, and the map will tell you where the closest transport link is and when it’s leaving.
Transport Direct is another universal service you can use to search timetables of different coach lines to find the best one for you. It offers the same service when searching for a local bus route and will also calculate the most efficient way to get to your destination overall if for example you wanted to take a combination of the train and bus to get to where you’re going.
Travelling by coach bus
Coach buses are an easy option if you’re intending to travel longer distances. The carriage is more spacious and seats have been designed to be more comfortable. Most of the longer routes will have toilet facilities on board and many offer added luxuries like food and beverage and free Wi-Fi.
Three of the biggest coach operators in the UK are Megabus, National Express and Stagecoach Bus. Each website makes it easy to search routes, find timetables and even purchase tickets in advance online. Most main bus stations can be found right in the heart of the city or town centre, making it easy to start exploring once you’ve arrived at a new destination rather than worrying about finding your bearings.
