Where to see fantastic Easter traditions this year

Thinking of getting away over Easter and are looking for inspiration?

Here’s a look at some of the unique ways the period is celebrated across Europe.

Scoppio Del Carro – Florence↵

Florence

Every Easter Sunday a huge wagon takes a procession through the streets of Florence before coming to rest in the Cathedral Square. At the conclusion of his service, the Archbishop of Florence lights an arsenal of fireworks loaded on the wagon. “The explosion of the cart” has been performed since the 15th century and is said to bring good luck for the harvest and to the people of the city.

Visit Florence with Shearings over the Easter weekend as part of the Heart of Italy Tour, which includes an excursion to Rome. Prices start from £419pp for 9 days HB departing 24/03/18.

Pache Egg Plays and Egg Rolling Competitions – Cumbria, Lancashire and West Yorkshire↵

Pache Egg plays were performed for hundreds of years in these areas until the Great War when they almost died out. Recently they have enjoyed a revival with enthusiasts, the folk plays follow a traditional storyline of a hero who is killed, then revived to slay a monster. The related tradition of egg-rolling, which has taken place at Avenham Park, Preston for hundreds of years is a competition to see who can roll their egg furthest without it breaking.

Morecambe is the perfect place to experience both the Furness Morris men’s Pasche Egg play and take part in the egg roll at Avenham Park. Shearings’ tour, “Morecambe and the Tornado” leaves 26/03/18 for five days, with prices from £227pp on a Half Board basis.

Morris Dancing – England, particularly South West and South Coast↵

Morris Dancers at Holmfirth

Morris dancing is one of the oldest English traditions still maintained by groups up to the present day. Over Easter groups will be putting on performances across the country, with a large proportion along the South Coast and in the South West. Performances tend to be on either Good Friday or Easter Monday, with each troop’s schedule available online.

Shearings are operating a number of holidays to Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Sussex over the Easter weekend, check for more details here

Easter Fires – North West Europe↵

Paasvuur

This tradition evolved from vigils that have been held for hundreds of years outside churches in this area of Europe. Eventually, larger and larger fires have been built; the fire at Espelo in The Netherlands currently holds the record for the largest Easter fire at almost 50 metres tall. These huge bonfires are an amazing spectacle and a fantastic experience of whole communities coming together to celebrate as one.

Late March is a fantastic time to visit The Netherlands, as tulips are in bloom. Shearings have a number of tours which take in the famous Keukenhof Gardens where you can see a huge array of flowers and offer free time for you to experience the incredible Easter fires.

Shearings are the country’s largest escorted tour company with a wide variety of tours departing over the Easter weekend. Shearings offer local pickup from over 600 locations nationwide, half board accommodation, modern, hi-spec coaches and included excursions as standard. Free time has been built into all tours, allowing you to explore nearby destinations such as those mentioned in this article at leisure. Take a look at further Easter inspiration now!
