House sitting – Your Top 5 Questions

What a great response to last week’s article “World Wide Free Accommodation” with many of you wanting to know more about house sitting and engaging house sitters ….. the Genie is out of the bottle!!

Over the next few weeks I’ll be answering your questions and revealing more about this wonderful, travel lifestyle becoming increasingly popular with 50 somethings who want more away time, without breaking the retirement bank. As a sitter, imagine planning trips with no accommodation costs; or a homeowner going away without worrying about home or precious pets. House sitting really is a altruistic win win for everyone and yes it is for everyone …… which brings me to one of the most asked questions:

Can singles also go house sitting?

My reply has to be, why not? For starters house sitting offers the best free, self catering accommodation. Never pay another “single supplement”! Imagine a home away from home, in a location of your choice, having the opportunity to house sit locally or travel long haul. No more impersonal hotels or resorts, instead your home owner will welcome you into their home and community. As a single, mature traveler you probably enjoy your own company some of the time, house sitting is brilliant for those other moments. On solo assignments I found neighbours would occasionally stop by or call to invite me over to their homes. But undoubtedly the greatest pleasure, for animal lovers, will come from having the company of beloved family pets, instantly you have a best friend one who will remember you when you’re invited back …. that’s the nature of house sitting!

How can I get started house sitting?

Most 50 somethings have all the experience required to get started as a house sitting – if you’ve ever owned your own home and pets you have the relevant experience. House sitting requires a genuine sense of purpose and responsibility. As long as you can demonstrate the qualities home and pet owners are looking for, as well as providing excellent references, there are no boundaries. You may even have cared for friend’s homes and pets, house sitting without really knowing it! In fact this is a great place to start. Not all homeowners are looking for bags of assignment experience, they are looking for that special sitter, you could just be the one!

To find and apply for house sitting assignments you can create a personal profile at TrustedHousesitters.com.If you need help take a look at the FAQ section or the blog. Once your membership is active you’ll have access to, and can apply for, all listings 24 hours before they are available for non-members to view. You’ll also receive daily email alerts with the very latest world wide assignment opportunities, or simply in the locations of interest to you.

Is this too good to be true?

This is a question I get asked a lot! Free accommodation in beautiful locations around the world? A reliable and trustworthy house sitter looking after your home free of charge? How can that be possible? But it is! TrustedHousesitters.com is connecting like minded people across the globe happy to help each other caring for homes and pets.

We have been house sitting around the world for over 7 years – Australia, the USA, UK, France and Italy to name a few. All the while we’ve engaged house sitters ourselves to look after our home. We know it’s true.

There are lots of other examples of how the service is helping the over 50s on the TrustedHousesitters.com blog.

  • Semi-retired Mike and Sandra from Chicago made the most of their new flexibility with a 2 month house sit in Hawaii

  • Carmel and Neil from Australia discovered house sitting by accident and have visited New Zealand, France, Canada, Fiji, & Australia so far, and they haven’t finished yet.

  • Lucy found a pet sitter in London and was so thrilled to discover the concept of house sitting she has now set off on her own adventure.

Why not just house swap?

Many of us in our later years are now in a unique position of having the flexibility to travel whenever and wherever they want – so why stick to just having to swap like for like? House sitting gives the ultimate flexibility. You can choose from upmarket, city centre apartments; stunning rural idylls; remote, off grid adventures; beach front villas in exclusive locations, the list is endless. Go away for a weekend, short vacation, grown up gap year or choose a new life of perpetual travel.

And while you enjoy your jet setting lifestyle you can find an ideal sitter for your own home and pets. Knowing you have chosen someone who is a genuine animal lover – not just someone looking for a low cost holiday – gives fantastic peace of mind while you have your own adventure.

My husband, John, and I are currently enjoying a 6 month house sitting assignment in Southern Spain while our home in Vancouver is being cared for by a wonderful couple from Australia. This just wouldn’t have been possible with a traditional house swap.

I have a dog, can I go house sitting?

Having pets is cited as being one of the biggest reasons the over 50s don’t travel as much as they would like to. No-one likes to think of their beloved four legged family members languishing in kennels when they are away. But the best thing about house sitting is that while you find your dream assignment you can also find a dedicated, reliable animal lover who will take care of your pets just like you would, for free. Guilt free travel while saving £££’s on accommodation and pet care costs – it’s the perfect solution!

My partner and I would love to have the opportunity of house/pet sitting. Is there an age limit taken into account for such an assignment. Thank you.
Kind regards
