The Scafell Hotel is a wonderful Country House Hotel located in the very heart of Borrowdale, considered by many as England’s finest valley, surrounded by mighty fells, tranquil meadows and crystal clear waters.
A paradise for the walker and a perfect centre from which to visit other parts of the Lake District.
The Hotel is situated almost at the foot of Great Gable and the Scafell Massif, and is regarded one of the Lake District’s renowned headquarters for climbers and hill walkers. Keen anglers will appreciate the Scafell Hotel, as there is excellent fly fishing on the River Derwent and in Derwentwater. Those who are content with gentle rambling or just lazing on restful lawns fringed by trees amidst imposing scenery will be equally happy staying here.
Our rooms were fully refurbished during 2009, in a Warm and Rich Country House style with a ‘Contemporary Twist’ perfect for setting the scene for a peaceful and relaxing break in the beautiful Borrowdale Valley.
The Restaurant, Lounges and Bar have been tastefully decorated and furnished to retain that all important Country House warmth, allowing for complete relaxation after a great days walking on the Fells, and maybe even a little ‘nap’ by the fire after a delicious five course Dinner.
Under the constant direction of owner’s Miles Jessop MBE (Chairman) and Andrew Nelson (Managing Director) the Management and Team of Scafell Hotel offer truly warm and friendly service. Individual and Independent Country House Hotel for the last 40 years.
Eat & Drink
Not only is the Scafell Hotel in one of the most stunning locations in the Lake
District, but GREAT FOOD, GREAT WINE, GREAT BEER and of course GREAT SERVICE make us an eating destination.
Choose from the luxury of the Restaurant for Dinner & Sunday Lunch, where we serve a 5 course fine dining menu (changed daily) & three course Sunday Lunch, both featuring the finest Cumbrian and locally sourced produce, a selection of local Cumbrian cheeses served on Honister Slate finished with a fresh cafetiere of fairtrade coffee and Sarah Nelsons Ginger Bread, or the Lounge & Lawn menu for a casual & relaxing lunch from the hotels Lounge Bar. Why not “Fill Yer Boots” after an invigorating walk on the fells and choose a delicious dish from the Riverside Bars new menu or specials board (served with real homemade chips) and then face the difficult decision of which real ale, wine of the month or malt to try and finish with one of our speciality coffees served with Sarah Nelson Grasmere Ginger Bread.
The Riverside Bar
The Riverside Bar is the pubic bar directly beside the Scafell Hotel and offers a great range of real ales from Jennings, Copper Dragon and Old Peculiar to beers from Local and Micro breweries like Keswick Brewery, Hesket Newmarket and Barngates, fine malts (we have over 60 to choose from), great ‘Fill Yer Boot’s’ food with regular specials and proper Cumbrian ‘crack’. Here you meet the locals from around Borrowdale Valley as well as other visitors within the area.
The bar is an ideal place to finish after a good hearty walk where you can enjoy a drink and discuss your day’s adventures in front of open fires (seasonal) or on the veranda during those warmer months.
This popular bar overlooks the river yet is cosy in all weather. This is where the popular Borrowdale Fell Race finishes and a good place to meet many of the fell race stars or view the Fell Race winner’s board above the main fireplace. Pop along to experience some real Lakeland’ and enjoy the laid back atmosphere with great service.
