NewHello Nigel. Deepest sympathy to you - a very difficiult time. If you want to talk about it there are plenty of us on here who have been through it and understand your need,,,,Many will reply if we can find our way back to you...that is the biggest problem....so bear in mind if it appears no-one answered...it is difficult to keep track of conversations on here,,,keep trying! Anybody out there finding themselves on their ownSo agree with you! Unless there is a group of like minded people living in the same area and able to meet up for coffee initially - to get to know each other...it can be very difficult. Friendship sites need promoting more - as so many on the Dating Sites do not want to spend time emailing to get to know each other first, It seems more sensible to me as often find incompatibilities through writing! And if they can't be bothered to write - well perhaps they are not looking for the same thing anyway!ViewDate:

Any ideas how to start over meeting new friends at 72?Have you considered Volunteering? A local NT Trust site or similar. That is what I have done for the last couple of years alone and have learned a lot from being there as well as thoroughly enjoying talking to visitors and making new friends. If you enquire they will usually invite you in to have a tour and tell you what is involved. Hours are as much or as little as you wish...no pressure...worth a go! Good Luck anyway.ViewDate:

Another new member saying hello!Wonderng if you are back in UK now Graham and how it all went! Seems to be a few people retuning "home" after a lifetime away...will be interesting to know how you all find things now...so much has changed. In a similar situation insofar as living in an area my late husband originated fr0m - nice and rural until you are alone! My two dogs keep me sane...whilst I ponder a move north to where I originated from - and happy to chat with anyone in similar situation. Sometimes as we get older and have more problems the family not so keen to have us around!! Not very encouraging! So - hope to make new friends and support each other!ViewDate:

Pain and inflammationAs Naproxen doing little good for my leg pains contacted GP as wondered if low bone density - had this once before and was put on calcium and Vit D for a while...then had to move house and new GP stoped it and said all was ok now. That was 20 years ago but had problems now for 2 years and no chance of face to face GP appoiintment only via telephone - and he just added Codeine to Naproxen and Paracetamol advice! And yes - to take all at same times! Rings alarm bells for me. Self referred to Physio - waiting for appointment with senior Physio first to decide if i should go for a bone scan or not! And so it goes on! Sent me exercises to do meanwhile as not til October. Some I can do,.,most I cannot! Can hardly walk sometimes - have to use a stick for balance - and it is demoralising. Little help from anywhere these days. Hope you get your scan soon!ViewDate:

Anybody out there finding themselves on their ownIt's ok if there is public transport (non here) or you are still driving...everything changes otherwise! As the plan is to remove vehicles from the roads and make them too expensive to run for the majority - then it will really hit home for those unaware as yet. Towns will become the more residential areas - shopping on line for everything...time will tell how it all works out. 100 passes a year to leave the zone you are allocated to iive in - per family - and cameras that count every journey as you leave and return...a whole different world for those of us used to freedom to come and go here and abroad - as we please. Many of us won't be around by then I suppose - we had the best of times - growing up ijn the 60's etc ...so I am thankful for that.ViewDate:

Anybody out there finding themselves on their ownI just went on to the site - and so took a look at New Members - and there are many. However I was surprised to find - here on Silversurfers - youngsters under the age of 50 ..ie from their 20's upwards! Lots of them! What a sorry state of affairs! I have ignored contacts in their 50;s in the past - for heaven sake why would they want me to be a friend as so much older....rational thought involved! Take care ladies! There are nice guys out there - they just take a bit of finding! :)ViewDate:

Anybody out there finding themselves on their ownBeen watching Mike Graham on TalkTV and he has just returned from a hoiday in Normandy - driving with his family - and said there were no hold ups at all...not a single problem on the journey in either direction - so that offers hope! I know they used to check all Passports when we travelled via coaches years ago - pre Brexit - and someone got on the coach and it was all done withih 5 mins...so hopefully they have got their act together now. I will mention Single Ladies to my friend in Devon as well - she may be interested. She seems to go on all sorts of interesting trips - sometimes on Sailing boats with several other traellers too!. I agree with what you say about going places on your own...it is difficult to strike up conversations and we can be regarded with suspicion! lol! That is why I enjoy volunteering so much - it is my job to do that and it is great fun sharing the knowledge I have now absorbed! Lots of laughter too! Do update us in due course - I enjoy hearing about people's travels...mine are somewhat limited now because I have two dogs and they have never been in kennels - always came everywhere with us - cat too at one time - even caravanning in France....so have to find the best ever Kennels for me to leave them now! Go for it gal! :)ViewDate:

Silversurfers dating?Arbyrb5 - the way you met up initially is exactly as always advised by Security Services and it's important to be aware of. Always meet in a very public place - always let someone else know where you are going beforehand and what time to expect you back home...a routine to follow in order to keep you safe. Essential these days. Do not share too many personal details until you have met up several times - at a mutually convenient place - for a coffee etc where you can get up and leave easily if things are not going well!ViewDate:

Simple start to a chat?We need to set up a Chat Room which anyone can hop in and out of...join in conversations they have interest in and feel comfortable doing so. Then leave and have a chance of finding it again in due course! That seems to be the main problem at the moment! Have a good weekend all!ViewDate:

Speakers Corner CommentsSo agree - some of the radio stations are going to regret the changes they have made...they appear blinkered in not realising the wide audience they had before - from all age groups - my daughter always tuned in to Terry in the mornings! I rarely listen to the BBC channels now...prefer TalkTV and also GBNews - informative and entertaining...I swap between the two to my favourites! Didn't know of Boom Radio...must try and find it! If I want music I usually find it on Sky Arts - pop - or via Andre Rieu, ...or turn on Classic FM when volunteering in the NT Bookshop! Mobility Showroom sounds interesting - does that mean you sell Trampers or Mobility Scooters? We actually buy these for our visitors to use at the tourist site where I volunteer - with the money we make from the second hand Book sales! A big site to get around and opens it up to many more people with mobility problems, CaroViewDate:

Anybody out there finding themselves on their ownReally interesting to read what you say and so agree. Since being widowed I started volunteering for the NT - guiding and also running the bookshop. I chat to people coming in and one day a woman was paying me for her choice and she said how nice it was to be able to come in and talk to someone as well..a rare occurrence these days! Your words reminded me of her...and I understand as I am alone most of the time myself - family all up north a 4 hour min drive away. So I recommend volunteering to anyone feeling the same...I meet lots of lovely people and the young staff are so kind too...Always something different going on and quite a lot of fun and laughter. Makes all the difference! We could do with a specified Chat Room where we can all come and find each other when we need a chat! I didn't know there was one on here as such...and I seem to have difficulty finding my way back to where I was every time I come on...despite noting the route to follow..it seems to change. Hope to meet you all again at some point folks! Groping my way around like a lost soul! :)ViewDate:

Anybody out there finding themselves on their ownWe have to be so careful - there is always someone ready to rip us off - I have fiound that out since being widowed in 2019 too. I refuse to give my phone number out on the Dating site where I was hoping to make some firiends - but it doesn't seem to work that way! What I found after giving my email address to someone I not only get emails from him but also from other Dating sites...like Ukraine Women etc!! Just what i don;t want; They fill my Junk folder now and very annoying - and as he had jokingly said he had thought of taking in a UKrainian blonde bombshell there can only be a connection. So a waste of time to be frank. It must have been awful on the cruise = confined space and unable to get away from an unpleasant person. Learn from it. Never share the costs with someone you do not know really well...and not always wise even then - both pay up at the time. It is not a rare thing to hear of men who rip off women...they are contemptable! Use the experience as a lesson never to be repeated in the future! Take care - your kindness was abused and you deserved better!ViewDate:

Do you think Camilla should be crowned queen?Personally I think It's a shame we can't have a Queen Anne! More back bone than any of them. and underestimated by most as she works away in the background unnoticed.ViewDate:

Do you think Camilla should be crowned queen?Charles and Camilla were made for each other and have been devoted for a life time. Camilla wasn't deemed suitable when young so went away in the end and married someone else...who was a mistake. Meanwhile Charles was being encouraged to marry and provide heirs and Diana was the one...the rest is history now, We all loved Diana but ...Camilla and Charles got back together and she has been by his side ever since. Supportive and encouraging whilst remaining in the back ground most of the time. The Queen recognised this and decreed Camilla should be Queen when Charles became King - and so be it. I am happy to see her crowned alongside her husband now = as was the Queen mother before her.. She has earned her place and is well liked by those who know her - personally I think she must have the patience of Job! :)ViewDate:

Looking or frienshipSounds good! Meeting up with old friends from time to time - I am doing the same whilst volunteering in a second hand bookshop this 'Saturday - then popping into the cafe with my friend for a light lunch - well known Suffolk tourist site! Good memories of Madeira - had a tour from a cruise ship one day - some years ago...a lovely island and a favourite - I hear it is quite breath-taking to fly into though!! We saw the balcony where Churchill used to do his painting - a hire car took us round all the well known places to visit - a nice experience. Would have liked to be there longer! A nice break for your famly at this time of year! CaroViewDate:

Rescue animalsI think that's womderful Oom...you m,ust have plenty of space for them and how lucky they are to be staying with you for ever now. Have to confess I would be the same...very hard to let them go. I fostered baby kittens for the RSPCA some years ago..bottle feeding until they were old enough to go to new homes...but it was such a wrench then! My babies. I now have two dogs of my own and they are wonderful company - so sensitive to my moods/feelings. I only have to sniff and the older one runs across to check I am ok. They are my best pals. I am looking forward to better weather so can get out with them more. Mostly a mad chase round the garden just now. CaroViewDate:
