A little maintenance goes a long way
As the month progresses there are still plenty of jobs to be done in the garden.
A few jobs to consider are, feeding border perennials and containers with liquid feed such as tomato food. Keep deadheading flowers, to allow for new flower buds to form and flourish. Trees such as alpines can benefit from a tidy up, especially if they have developed bare patches. It’s also important to look after your soil by feeding it regularly with green manures, and dealing with perennial weeds when they are active, with weedkillers containing glyphosate.
Make a time for vegetable sowing
If you think your work is finished in the vegetable patch, this month is the perfect opportunity to get some quick-growing crops in the ground, such as radish, sorrel, fennel, summer lettuce, rocket and chicory. It’s also an ideal time for the continued sowing of vegetables such as turnips, overwintering onions, spring cabbage and oriental vegetables, all in time for next year’s harvest. It also might be worth covering bare areas and improving the soil texture and nutrients, by sowing in some green manures.
Behind the Scenes Tour – The Scientific work of the RHS (NGE)
This fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of RHS Garden Wisley’s scientific work runs on 19 August between 2pm and 3.30pm. You will get the chance to see how scientists carry out their research, ask questions and learn about their contribution made in the 100 years the laboratory has been in service. Highlights include the insect specimen collection; the plants for bug’s research; journals and books; fungus research, and the herbarium of cultivated plants. This is just a small portion of what can be seen at Wisley, so why not come along and learn something new? This tour and ticket does not include entry to the Garden.
Contemporary Craft & Design Fair
If you’re looking for something individual or originally produced, then the contemporary craft and design fair at RHS Garden Hyde Hall and by Craft in Focus is for you. Between 10am and 5pm you can view and purchase more unusual items produced by businesses that have been selected for their technical ability, innovation and originality in the area of contemporary design and craft. Admission costs to the garden still apply.
