Planting for wildlife

Spring is the ideal time of year to start thinking about creating a haven for the wildlife in your garden.

With the RHS National Gardening Week running from the 14th-20th April and coinciding with the long Easter weekend, it’s the perfect time to add some new wildlife friendly plants to your patch.

Whether you are in an urban area or the countryside, a sustainable wildlife garden generally starts with sensible planting and selecting the right plants couldn’t be easier with the help of CJ Wildlife (Europe’s leading garden wildlife specialists). Their extensive range, of over 100 plants, has been chosen by their team of experts to specifically appeal to British birds, mammals and insects.

A wildlife garden can be both visually attractive and beneficial to its inhabitants. Growing a combination of plants that flower at different times throughout the year will create the best environment to attract a wider variety of species.  These are some of the types of plants you could consider:

Perennials – Bright, colourful, highly scented plants are often very attractive to bees, butterflies and insects, especially when they have nectar-rich flowers too.

Shrubs & Evergreens – Dense vegetation such as shrubs and evergreens make great nesting sites for birds and offer areas of shelter to amphibians and small mammals.

Fruit Bushes – Plants that provide a natural source of food, such as edible berries on fruit bushes, will attract a variety of birds.

Wetland Plants – Ponds can play an important role in a wildlife garden and the surrounding plants will serve as a source of food for animals and insects that dwell in this location.

Long grass – Leaving areas of garden ‘wild’ with long grass can attract mammals such as hedgehogs as well as an abundance of insects – why not add some wildflower seeds and create your own mini meadow?
