Caring for a parent or loved one with DementiaWe are just going through the stage of getting a home for my mother-in-law. The biggest problem we had looking after her at home was that my husband and I are both getting old and it takes us all out time to look after ourselves. She has been losing her memory for the last year and kept forgetting to eat etc. My m-i-l is 100yrs old and lived at home until she was taken into hospital a few weeks ago with a water infection. It was the social services who made the decision she needed to go into a home where she could get 24hr help if needed. We were grateful we didn't have to make the choice, so we do not feel too guilty.ViewDate:

Are you plagued by nuisance calls and what is your strategy for dealing with them?I am sure anything that helps would be welcome. It would also have to include withheld numbers and numbers that are unrecognisable as standard UK ones eg we had one a week or two back that was just a series of zeros.ViewDate:

Do you care for a relative who is reliant on your support?Sorry to hear your dad has dementia. My husband is main family carer for his 99yr old mother, I can see it taking a toll on him. She has lost her short term memory and is constantly phoning him to say she has lost ....... so he to drop everything and go and find her things (it is usually the bread she has lost :-? ) She lives on her own and is under constant assessment (husband ensures they assess her regularly), and has recently been appointed a morning and evening carer who are supposed to ensure she is feeding herself, getting her up in the morning, putting her to bed and give her her medication. Problem is she is an early riser so gets herself up and she has fallen several times  Bedtime is 8pm, she has accepted that but many times they do not let my husband know she is running out of tablets until she is down to her last one.ViewDate:

Are you plagued by nuisance calls and what is your strategy for dealing with them?My husband says 'He (whatever name they ask for) is not in at the moment, can you leave your number and he will get back to you' - funny but they never leave a number:-) One thing you have to be careful with is not to be too hasty. I received a call a few days ago and thought it was a nuisance call and was just about to say 'not interested' (my usual comment), when the caller said it was Alison from the surgery and wanted to ask me a question re my prescription. She apologised for taking a second or two to react to my 'Hello' as she was busy trying to do two things at once as usual.
