Is 'affluenza' eroding our happiness?I think most unhappiness comes from people desperately trying to live up to an image. I don't think being wealthy necessarily makes people unhappy. The most wealthy people I've come across haven't driven smart cars and dressed in designer clothes. They often had old houses with worn rugs and certainly didn't show off their wealth. So many people get into debt because of the confusion between want and need. Someone on here said rightly about how shopping has become an obsession.ViewDate:

working in our 60sWell, I'm pleased to say I've been offered a Teaching Assistant role at a junior school in King's Lynn. This will be 25 hours per week and for me will be a good work/home life balance. I've very much enjoyed working as a TA over the years. So there we go, not over the hill yet.ViewDate:

Should the NHS provide better mental health treatment options for depression? This is very difficult. I think one of the problems is that people can go to their GP with symptoms of depression but the reasons for their depression can vary. Some people have a clinical imbalance and anti-depressants work very well. Others have a lot of worry and unhappiness in their lives and these factors cause depression. If you've recently been bereaved, have financial/relationship/health worries etc. then it's normal to feel depressed and it's probably beneficial to use anti-depressants for a while and at the same time try to find a way of coming to terms with and/or improving the areas that cause distress. The Well-Being services are very useful and can be accessed quickly.ViewDate:

Are Advent calendars becoming too commercialised?I also loved my glittery advent calendar with a picture behind. I used to buy my daughter the same type. I think calendars that just have chocolates are pretty boring really; no surprise the next day. A couple of years' ago I went with my daughter and grandsons to their Christingle service and that made my Christmas. I still enjoy Christmas and take out of it what I enjoy. I enjoy singing carols, sending cards to people I don't get to see, eating a lovely meal and buying gifts for my nearest and dearest.ViewDate:

Do your pets get distressed with the sound of fireworks?I've been told that in Italy they only sell silent fireworks. I think most owners of animals dread this time of year. Perhaps silent fireworks would be a compromise.ViewDate:

Do you wear your poppy with pride?I wear a poppy with pride. A grandfather fought at Ypres, an uncle was killed in Libya and my late father was a POW with the Japanese. My father never bore bitterness. He always said they were all young people (on both sides) who found themselves in situations not of their choosing. A book I can recommend is 'Wolfram - the boy who went to war' by Giles Milton. This book is about the experiences of his father-in-law. Although my father endured nightmares until his death aged 88, I know he would have enjoyed engaging in conversation with Wolfram.ViewDate:

working in our 60sThank you for your response patcaf. I'm currently unemployed and have racked my brains re starting my own business. I agree it's difficult to find employment anywhere which is why I decided not to return to Bedfordshire. Whilst there are more jobs available in Bedfordshire, due to it being a semi-rural area, there are also far more people applying for them. I did attend an interview for care work and was told because I'm 60 I wouldn't receive any sick pay if I was off work. I made it clear I wasn't impressed by this.ViewDate:

working in our 60sI'm due to work until I'm 66 and I don't have a problem with that in itself. My own problem is finding work. I moved to Norfolk 4 years' ago and have been out of work most of the time. I have considered moving back to Bedfordshire but can't afford to move within the area I came from. I do get interviews which is encouraging so try to stay positive and plod on. -
