Where have those day’s gone?

Pat Noon turns back the clock to the happy days growing up with her siblings

Where have those day’s gone?

Two up. Two down
Had to share a bed
No bunk beds then
A double bed instead.

A wooden headboard
Top and bottom
Clean sheets on Friday
Of course they were cotton.

All tucked in
Blankets galore
A hot water-bottle in winter,
Chilblains and more.

No fitted carpet
Just a homemade rug
Covered the holes
Of the woodworm bug.

Icicles hang
From the window inside
Winter has come
Stay under the cover and hide.

You could  see your breath
When it was cold
Didn’t want to get up
Even when I was told.

Mum put a potty
Under our bed
Don’t wake me up
To go outside instead.

Yes the outside toilet
In the middle of the night
It’s the wind I feared most
Cause it blew out my light.

Woken in the morning
As the kettle whistled on
Tea and toast for breakfast
Where have those good days gone.

Thankful for the cards I was dealt
Memories everlasting
Wouldn’t want to change a thing
A truly perfect casting.
