Should the Jeremy Kyle show be dropped?

The Jeremy Kyle Show has been branded a “theatre of cruelty” following the apparent suicide of a man who appeared on the programme.

Experts have urged ITV to drop the programme following the death and compared it to Romans setting lions on Christian martyrs.

ITV pulled the confrontational talk show indefinitely following the death of a guest, named as 63-year-old Steve Dymond, a week after the programme was filmed.

There have been calls for a review into the impact of reality TV on the mental health of vulnerable people and concerns have been raised over the damage caused by public “shaming”.

What are your views on the programme?  Do you watch it regularly?  Have you ever watch it at all? Is it time for it to axed or would you like to see it continue?

I think the show was all a put up job and all the people who appeared we told how to act and perform and just a contest who could shout the loudest

The people who go on this programme do it willingly. They are out up in a hotel, filled with booze and then voluntarily shamed. They have no one to blame for this car crash tv apart from themselves.

Watched the programme a couple of times, it was the cheapest, nastiest television I've ever experienced. While some people like their 5 minutes of fame this is a very dangerous way to get it and I'm pleased it's now been removed permanently. Germy Vile should never be allowed on television again, I wonder how many relationships/friendships he has broken up with a lie detector that can never be classed as 100% guaranteed safe. I'm more than a little surprised that the sad death of a person after his appearance hasn't happened long time ago.

Years ago there was a programme called “Clive James on TV” which I think later became “Chris tarrant on TV” they used to show clips of a game show from Japan called Endurance whereby contestants were put in boxes of rats or insects or had to eat disgusting things, we all watched horrified, yet here we are some years later with “I’m a celebrity”, shows of this genre, Jeremy Kyle, the early stages of X factor and BGT, judge Rinder, judge Judy etc......appeal to the tabloid , sensational side of people’s nature, they are cheap voyeurism, not entertainment, they are enjoyed by the type of people who film car accidents on their mobile phones, and Yes they should be banned.

I feel the high-faulting attitude from MP's etc is that they don't want to be confronted by the fact that we have a sub culture of people with no money,no,jobs, no ambition,no future and no teeth. Oh how awful for them in their ivory towers to be exposed to this. Also, JK gave 'common people' counselling, DNA results and access to talented researchers and access to rehab which changed peoples' lives,. Above all people were answerable for abuse and trolling face to face rather than hiding on the web. I have more of a problem with the voyeuristic style programmes where watchers actually think they're part of these peoples' lives and don't accept they are all staged and edited.

A very insightful comment on about this show. I totally agree that people used it for exactly the reasons you have mentioned, on the whole.
Participants were taken to the brink at times and it concerned me deeply.
It needed to be seen to be regulated and perhaps the gent who took his own life would now still be alive, and maybe, problems sorted. Dying isn't an answer and he must have been very distressed.

The Jeremy Kyle Show participants are vulnerable people but also should have been aware of the shows format. Why people wish to participate in the programme is beyond me ,but if I were desperate for help with an addiction or unresolvable family problem it might seem the only option. It annoys me that if a TV programme is involved people get given help that should have been available anyway.
I do appreciate some may enjoy the publicity but it is not entertainment to humiliate people there are more appropriate ways of helping people but they don't make TV viewing as not sensational enough.

I don’t like reality tv anyway but I don’t think that Jeremy Kyle should be vilified for this. Those that appear are well paid for appearing, and have a good back up package. It’s all down to lazy television in my opinion, along with the likes of, love island and big brother etc - even the soaps are depressing enough to make people want to attempt suicide that’s why I stopped watching them long ago. It’s about time the program makers did a better job and gave us real entertainment. A lot of people behind the scenes have lost there jobs too now and I don’t think that it is fair to just cancel the show when other shows are equally at fault.

Oh dear! I have seen a couple of these shows years ago. Didnt like them but to vilify this man because there was a suicide? With all the things said about him I feel that without help he might have got there anyway.
Everyone jumping on the bandwagon blaming JK is pretty horrendous as well, especially as most of them deny ever seeing the show so must have formed an opinion from all the talk today and therefore baying for blood without knowing the facts. I am not a fan of cheap television and feel that now the decision has been made to axe the show there are a number of other 'shows' that should also go.

It is the people who write into the show, they are aware of what happens, I'm sorry to hear about the person that died but, you or anyone else can't put this blame on Jeremy.
If anyone is at fault it is his girlfriend, she obviously didn't trust or love him enough to dump him like she did.
Are you and others going to be blaming Jeremy if anyone else has passed since being on his show

Difficult one to comment on. None of us know what was going on in this man's life, the build up or his mental state. There is never just 1 deciding factor if someone commits suicide & never find out the real reason. I don't like the Kyle show anymore ,I used to watch it years ago when they had real human stories, but jeremy became loud, over bearing and some of the guests were to be frank not always "all there ". Not mentally more socially lacking in how to behave etc. I don't think the show can be blamed for this man choosing to kill himself. I believe the show has helped to turn alot of people's lives around frim drugs, alchol abuse etc, brought families together too,but the media etc don't put the shows successes on the front pages or over facebook, only the one albiet tragic and very sad death of a past guest. I'm sorry if my comment offends but the question to answer isn't as simple as a yes or no answer xxx

Lowest common denominator TV. I am not a snob, nor only a viewer of high art but have seen this twice (had to, couldn't believe it first time). Found it hard to believe that these were real people in real situations. I have to hold my hands up, I think almost of badly about "I'm a Celebrity, Big Brother, Love Island, TOWIE, Geordie Shore etc.
Yes, I know, I'm a reactionary old fart but that's my honest opinion but I also know that lots of people enjoy them. C'EST LA VIE.

No it should not be cancelled UNLESS they cancel all the other car crash reality TV as well - Love Island springs to mind where there have been 3 very recent suicides. All reality TV is there for the purpose of exploiting people for entertainment and monetary gain. However, having that, every single person who appears on reality TV and the JK show does so willingly through their own choice therefore those people have made a conscious decision to appear in front of TV cameras and are responsible for their own actions so nobody should have to take the blame for the actions of that person and let us not forget that suicide is a choice made by the person who commits it, for whatever reason.

There is of course a huge problem with mental health in the UK and that links into reality TV and other commercial money making vessels. The guest who committed suicide clearly had mental health problems before he went on the JK show, which is the reason he was there in the first place. So I don't see why JK is being scapegoated when there is so much other questionable trash on our TV.

We need properly funded and high quality mental health care in the UK provided by the NHS and NOT by private companies and if there was adequate mental health care then people wouldn't be forced into appearing on car crash TV which only benefits the TV stations and the presenters. In cancelling JK, please let us see the cancellation of the rest of the dross on TV with immediate effect!

Why should he have his program taken off air because someone decides to end their life. He had been cleared by the after care team as stable enough to appear on the program. He failed the lie detector test so he was obviously lying about something. So if you don’t want your dirty laundry airing in public don’t go on the show...!

I do believe it's time for the show to stop there has been good and bad about the Jeremy Kyle show at times the way he spoke to people was not called for , a lot of these people are vulnerable people you can tell and for my liking these people should not be allowed to go on the show in the first place , but he has done some good things sending addicts to rehab and having disabled people including children on the show and sending them off on holidays and buying them presents , it's the format that needed changing and the attitude of Jeremy Kyle , when it comes to life being lost there is nothing more for it ..

Loved the Jeremy Kyle show People are forgetting All the Great things the show does, all the people they helped get off drugs and sent to rehab, children with special needs they spent a lot of money on adventures, holidays, gifts just to put a smile on their faces. I think the show should continue as people apply to go on and it’s their decision, if they don’t like the truth, then it’s tough - they shouldn’t be on if they can’t handle the truth. Bring back Jeremy Kyle and the whole team Now ....

The problem is that their guests are not in a position to make an informed choice, they are mainly vulnerable, emotionally fragile, and they are totally unaware of the back scenes manipulation in order to create ‘good TV’. Please read about it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-48266570

This shows, and others like it, are just modern day voyeurism where the viewing public revel in the misfortunes of others. What amazes me is why these people go on TV to "air their dirty washing" in public which I can only think is to get their faces on TV and their 15 minutes of fame. Kyle should be ashamed at himself, making money out of misery, but he won't be because people who do this have no shame!

I think this kind of show is abhorrent. I have only ever seen clips of it. I am all for facing consequences and a bit of humiliation I don't believe a TV show is the right place. It panders to the pitch fork and mob rule primitive parts of human nature. The people that seek out this circus need help in other ways. The viewers need to get a life of their own, rather than have the time to sit down and watch this disfunctional society and people's lives fall apart..... Thanks, got that of my chest

It’s sensationalism using the most vulnerable and explosive people in our society today. They bring on, then try to manipulate pe0ple into arguments, and fights, they destroy people’s lives by mocking them, and as for mr Kyle himself I find him to be patronizing in the extreme. If he can humiliate somebody then he will, he will often use somebody’s appearance to make them appear stupid. He is smug and self serving. He likes to come over as mr nice guy before switching to mr I’M cleverer than you are and I am going to completely make you look stupid. He reminds me of a pathetic form of Jerry Springer. On rare occasions he will actually help somebody, but most of the time he ridicules his guests and tries to make them appear pathetically stupid...he is taking incredible risks sometimes with peoples lives and now the inevitable has happened. I am genuinely surprised that it hasn’t happened before now. He destroys people’s self esteem and just wants to bully and tear apart some incredibly vulnerable people. I stopped watching the show after they ridiculed a woman about her appearance, her teeth were appalling and he knew she would make for good cannon fodder to throw to the lions in his audience and at home. He is patronizing, and has what I call, “small man syndrome”...he always has to look like St Jeremy!! When in fact he is far from it. They choose the dregs of our society and deliberately and ritualistically humiliate them. Poke the bear and eventually the bear will lash out and do something....well now it’s happened and that poor mans family will never get over his loss, and what for I ask? An hour of entertainment for the so called British public who laugh at his ridiculing and manipulative ways. Shame shame shame on him and ITV for ever allowing this to go on for so long. My own very personal opinion, and one that I will never alter. The sad thing is that now he is establishing the same format over in America, being paid millions to do so, and I just sit and wonder how long it will take for some very sad and vulnerable person repeat what has now happened here. It’s all very very sad and could have been avoided much much sooner by ending his reign of manipulation and ridicule.

Just to correct you slightly, JK has not recorded in America for many years (I think he did 3 seasons over there) and compared to many of the shows the Americans have over there, JK is actually very tame by comparison.

Every single person who has ever appeared on the JK show has done so through their own choice - nobody has ever been forced into it. They are well known for their after care to guests and they have done so many good things for many people and children who need help. People coming off drugs and alcohol, people finding long lost parents/family members, sick and vulnerable children being given some happiness and fun? And so the list goes on.

In all of this, the public has failed to realise that the whole gem who work on the JK show are now going to be unemployed and they will all have mortgages/rent and bills to pay. I hear that there is now a public investigation going to take place on the whole of reality TV - bring it on so that finally British TV will finally be purged of all the vile car crash reality TV shows that are unacceptable and way past their sell by date!

Yes it should be dropped. There seems to be an upsurge of programmes that use the vulnerable as victims for the amusement of the masses.

He has in the past paid people to show rage and storm onto the stage, just to boost his shows ratings.

Polygraph tests are not entirely accurate, sometimes nervousness and anxiety can change readings. Broken people are the result of these tests, whether accurate or not.

Jeremy Kyle on a power trip- I detest him.
I would like to see him going through a polygraph test of his own for the truth.
His gambling addiction and affair with the nanny leading to divorce makes him a hypocrite.

All these abusive shows should be pulled.

Errrm I think you need to understand the facts before posting incorrect things on here. JK has always been completely open and transparent about his gambling addiction and how he overcame it. He has also openly shared his personal fight with testicular cancer so that men are aware of the signs. As for his "affair"??? JK did NOT have an affair - it was his ex-wife Carla who had the affair with her personal trainer whilst JK was away filming in the US. He didn't even start seeing the ex-nanny until a year or more after his divorce. The one thing you can never accuse the man of is deceiving the public or lying about his own personal issues - he has shared far more of himself with the public than he should have to. Moreover, if he had anything sinister to hide, don't you think, after 14 years, he might been exposed by now??

Whichever way you slice it Lorna, he is not the person to be shouting at his guests and calling them names on this platform.
That the nanny was with them for 9 years is a fact, that he eventually married her is a fact. His cheating wife accused him of having the affair.
( I think they should all be polygraphed.)

The statement was that he was a hypocrite to be abusing guests on stage while his own house was not in order.

Sharing himself with the public does not give him Carte Blanche to abuse people no matter what they have done.

Yes I agree with you about the abuse but once again I have to reiterate that these ‘broken’ People CHOOSE to go on the show to air their dirty keundry in public knowing full well how he treats his guests on tv. Even broken people have to take responsibility for their own actions. Jk has not yet married the nanny and again as I’ve mentuoned previously, he has always been open and transparent with his private life, which he doesn’t necessarily need to do. The fact that his wife cheated on him and he moved in with Graham when the marriage collapsed says it all really. Personally I’m not interested in his private life - he got divorced and now he’s in another relationship SO WHAT?? It happens to the best of people so you can’t judge anyone for getting divorced and meeting a new partner. At least the broken people can now stay out of the public eye and try to sort their own lives out and that includes knocking out a child every year by a different boyfriend and getting off the drugs and alcohol. I recently lost a sister to alcohol abuse and the family suffered years of abuse from her as a result. We all tried desperately to help her as did her 3 sons who she left behind but she didn’t want any help because she never believed she had a problem. It is a selfish self-inflicted state and the main people who suffer are the family. So please DO NOT start shouting your do-Gooder message to me about self-inflicted addicts because I have witnessed it first hand and seen the destruction it causes to families.

Let us not forget that JK did also help a lot of addicts where they recovered and other vulnerable people and children. The show has run its course and I’m certainly not sorry to see it finish but facts are facts and that is my main issue - acknowledging the facts.

I do find it silly to drop a show indefinitely because one of the quests passed away shortly afterwards. Jeremy does not health check his quests because of this and anyhow it would have probably costs this man's life even if he did not attend the show or anything like. He might have a weak heart to begin with and probably he knew about that himself.
The same happened to Tommy Cooper and yet that show has had a comeback.

This is one of the most vile disgusting shows I ever had the misfortune to see while I was visiting friends, in my opinion it should never have been aired in the first place.

I don't watch this programme but at least it brings to light the problems that people are going through. From what I have read yesterday any people taking part are given councelling afterwards so surely this is a good thing.

I have seen this show a couple of times and it just shows how humans are so toxic, vicious, depressingly inept and stupid. This is our society and our nation which is also blatantly showcased in our Parliment.

Blind arrogant ignorance as all humans we are superb at damaging and destroying the fabric of our lives and the only planet we can live on. But our planet is far beyond the capability and mind focus of people.

It is nearly impossible to bring anything that is really remedial into our world. In 1992 I discovered how human evolution gave us the ability to remedy physical pains and restrictions without any man made or natural products and is instant and permanent. The medical industry have refused trhe advancement because it means the medical sciences, practices and benefits means humans do not need the doctors, surgeons, drugs and equipment

ALL humans??
Quite a sweeping statement don't you think? ...sad that you have not come across some of the beautiful humans who do so much good in the world.

But then, you will not have heard of them, the media only focuses on the toxic. What a sad world you live in Wellman.

The show is a reflection of our troubled times and exploits people especially the poor and vulnerable. Jeremy Kyle seems a nasty bit of work as he has power in the studio and shouts at people. Get rid of the show now.

Whilst I have never been a fan of this show, I have seen the odd snipet when one of my grown up children has been wathching, and I have always been horrified at the shouting and abuse by the host and contestants. I can never understand why anyone would want to appear on this show to air their dirty laundry?? Perhaps they get paid and therefore if this is the case, then I think the ITV are praying on the vulnerable for their ratings, and it is time to rethink if this is morally right. Also from what I have read in the press (if it is true) Mr Kyle isn't exactly whiter than white himself.
