Would you welcome the 80’s mullet hairstyle back with open arms?

The much-ridiculed style is trending again after celebrities, singers and models begin sporting the look

Influenced by social media, which turns everything into a trend very quickly, it would appear that the mullet hairstyle is making a comeback!

Although it is largely agreed that the mullet’s first surge of popularity in the 20th Century was thanks to Paul McCartney (who debuted the look as early as 1972) and glam rock icon David Bowie – or as he was better known in his red mullet, Ziggy Stardust, tens of thousands of us rocked the mullet in the 1980s, with the likes of Rod Stewart, Peter Stringfellow and Andre Agassi and female stars such as Cher and Jane Fonda all sporting the short on top and long behind look.

The mullet died a death by the mid-90s and was condemned as one of the worst fashion trends of the decade but now it seems that, as with all fashion trends, things have gone full circle and far from being the butt of many jokes the mullet is once again the look to have.

More recently, Rihanna is the latest celebrity to jump on the mullet bandwagon with a wavy, shoulder-length take on the trend.

And of course we can’t forget modern mullet icon Joe Exotic of Tiger King fame.

Perhaps accidentally spurred on by the Covid 19 shutdown when home-cut hair was de rigueur and shaggier, looser styles born out of necessity became the norm, the mullet look gained a certain popularity.

Did you have a mullet in the 1980s? Do you like the mullet look? Would you have your hair cut in the mullet style again?
