Ten Countries. Four Capitals. One Iconic River.

Explore the many ports and possibilities of the Mighty Danube.

It’s inspired empires, dynasties, winemakers, and waltzes. Winding through ten countries, four capital cities and thousands of years of history, the legendary Danube is the setting for some of the most dramatic chapters in time.

As the river, Rieslings, and pilsners flow from the Black Forest of Germany all the way to the Black Sea, colourful experiences await at every palatial port. Just try to compose yourself through the harmonious streets of Vienna, the castle- and vineyard-clad hills of the Wachau Valley, and the lush green, medieval city of Bratislava. And that’s just the Upper Danube.

Cruising from baroque Budapest through the fortresses and towers of the Balkans, a wealth of elevating sights equally delights along the Lower Danube. As you follow in the footsteps of explorers, emperors, monarchs, and musicians all the way to Slovakia, Serbia, Romania, and Bulgaria, you’ll see why the Danube presents more ports and possibilities than any other European river.

On a typical cruise along the Danube, you see waves, water, and more water. On an Avalon cruise, legendary landmarks and postcard-perfect landscapes are always in view. But that’s not all … Far from it!

We make our splash at intriguing ports of call where we lead you down the paths less travelled to the sights more revered – all without the wait. Here are just some of the sights – and stories – that await you when you come sail away with Avalon Waterways!

Habsburg Happenings at Schönbrunn Palace in Austria.

The 1440-room Schönbrunn Palace was the magnificent summer home of Royalty. Designed to rival France’s Versailles, the palace portion of the complex (once a hunting lodge) was added in the mid-1600s. Spend a half-day here when you set sail with Avalon and see for yourself, why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site.

A Bite Out of History in Hungary.

Located north of Budapest sits the Castle of Visegrad, high above the Danube, providing picture-perfect views of the Borzsony Hills and the river bend. This castle fortress – built around 1250 held Vlad Dracula (the famous Prince of Wallachia) as a prisoner from 1462-1466. With Avalon, you can enjoy a hike up to the top of the castle to hear all about its history while witnessing incredible landscapes!

The Magnificent Melk Abbey in Austria.

Voted the “Best Historic Destination” worldwide, Melk Abbey is a sight to behold! Not only does its vivid yellow Baroque complex hold a grand posture overlooking the Danube River, but it’s also home to Monks who live in accordance with the rules of Saint Benedict. When you go on your Avalon cruise, make sure to take in the abbey’s Imperial staircase, huge marble hall, its “wow” library and abbey church. Then, head outside to reward yourself with sweeping views from Melk Abbey’s panoramic terrace.
