Ariane Poole, the makeup guru and font of beauty knowledge sheds light on makeup as a tool for self-expression, fun, and identity beyond the age of 50.
Typically, we may associate makeup in our 50s with remedial purposes, covering flaws, and trying to conform to societal norms. But what if we break free from this conditioned mindset and view makeup as a source of joy, creativity, and colour, a way to brighten our faces and lives?
Our approach to makeup evolves over the decades. In our teens, makeup serves as a mask, helping us appear more grown-up. In our 30s and 40s, often juggling careers and children, makeup becomes primarily functional. By our 60’s and 70’s the focus shifts to camouflaging flaws and correcting perceived imperfections.
However, Ariane wisely points out that as we age, we become more comfortable in our own skin, and makeup can be about self-expression. She emphasises the importance of the freedom not to conform to societal expectations that dictate wearing nudes for older women. “Bold colour does not mean looking like a clown,” Ariane asserts.
The colour spectrum has expanded, offering more flattering choices. She advises choosing a pop of colour for the eyes, lips, or cheeks to accentuate your best feature, rather than applying bright colour all over the face. Opt for softer pinks if you have thinner lips, steering clear of brown or taupe shades for cheeks, and experiment with coloured mascara for your eyes.
