This month British Gas announced an inflation-busting 12.5% increase on their electricity prices, adding an average of £76 a year to customer’s bills.
It seems that energy companies only ever put prices up. All of the so-called Big 6 have announced price hikes this year and many others are following suit. Energy costs have become a huge part of household expenses and sadly, over 4 million people are living in fuel poverty across the UK.
The news is particularly hard to swallow as wholesale energy costs have actually come down over the last year, and it appears that many companies are looking to increase already-healthy profits at the expense of loyal customers.
The Conservative party’s manifesto promise of reform of the market and an energy price cap is off the table following pressure from big business lobbying, and the outlook for energy consumers does look bleak.

Family-run company Fischer Energy has this month announced a price-drop of up to 5% off their electricity rates.
It is fabulous news from the Leicester-based company that supply 100% renewable electricity, produced from offshore UK wind farms.
Founder, Keith Bastian told Silversurfers,
“We have managed to make some savings ourselves from efficient business practices, and we have always promised our customers that we would pass these savings on to them. The energy market is fundamentally unfair and we are determined to make a positive difference. Our prices will come down immediately in time for the people and their winter.”
Putting an end to estimated bills.
The company, which began supplying energy in January, has vowed to end unfair practice in the energy market. One of the biggest customer gripes is receiving constant estimated bills. It’s a strange practice not tolerated in any other industry, yet is commonplace with energy.
