Clever uses for yeast
Dried yeast is a staple ingredient of any keen baker’s kitchen larder, but it can be used for so much more than just bread.
Here’s our favourite clever uses for yeast. Will you give any a go?
Make a face mask
The nutrients in yeast make this a great natural skincare product. Mix yeast with water to form a paste, then leave to stand for 30 minutes. Spread the paste into a thin layer on your face, then leave for 15-20 minutes.
Give your hair a boost
Yeast can also be used to give your hair a boost and restore shine. Mix a sachet of yeast with warm water, then massage thoroughly into damp hair. Let this rest for 30 minutes, then rinse out and wash your hair as usual.
Deter slugs
You can make an eco-friendly slug trap using yeast. Fill a jar with a mixture of dried yeast, salt and sugar. Add warm water to turn into a loose paste, then bury in your garden soil at an angle. Slugs will easily be able to make their way into the jar towards the solution, preventing them from reaching your precious garden plants. Empty and refill every few days.
Make insect food
Other insects, like ladybirds and bees, enjoy a yeast mixture as food. Mix a small amount of yeast, honey and water together and place on a small saucer in your garden for insects to enjoy.
Accelerate compost
Give your garden compost a helping hand and fuel decomposition with a yeast mixture. Fill a jug with water, yeast and sugar, then pour over cool compost to help the breakdown process.
