Fevva's bio
After a working life of teaching and, for the past 20 years, running a guest house, we (my husband and I) have retired to Dorset. We love the countryside and spend every moment we can walking, cycling and kayaking in Poole Harbour. Looking forward, once the Covid pandemic is under control, to meeting people through Amateur Dramatics and U3A. -

Older grandchildren who never say Thank Your for Christmas or Birthday chequesI don't really want a letter - I remember what a chore it was writing them as a child, and for my children when they were little. But I would like a telephone call, email or text message. Giving a present should be as enjoyable as receiving one; after all, it takes a lot of thought and effort to select and send something that you think your grandchildren will like. I had no acknowledgement from my 10 year old granddaughter on her birthday (even though we have talked on Zoom several times) and, frankly, it makes me feel like not giving her a Christmas present. Yes, I know that's petty! I would just like my grandchildren to understand and appreciate how lucky they are instead of taking it all for granted.ViewDate:

"really" making new friends!Oh Lily, your comments, and everyone else's, have got me worried. We are about to retire to Dorset, where we know no-one. My plan was to join U3A and walking and cycling groups, but it doesn't sound hopeful from everyone's experiences. I will miss my amateur dramatics group, so I think perhaps I will seek out a new one. It's a very good way of getting involved with others through a project - the latest production - and there's always lots of work to be done and teamwork. Wish me luck!ViewDate:

Easter - how will you be celebrating? We'll be starting the day with a glass of Buck's Fizz to accompany our porridge, boiled eggs and toast. Then, since we won't have our grandchildren here, we will have an Easter Egg hunt for our shared egg. I've just got to remember where I put it. Followed by a good long walk around the local vineyards (anticipating the glass or two with lunch!) And home to cook the aforementioned lunch (free range chicken, veg, chocolate mousse, wine) and after lunch snooze. We will chat with the family via Zoom during the afternoon - feeling very grateful for modern technology! Then a DVD in the evening - I'm thinking Brief Encounter, so nostalgic and we love the trains. And so to bed. It will be a good day, despite not being able to hug our nearest and dearest!ViewDate:

Does knowing your times tables really matter these days?Children are still taught times tables in school, although usually in a practical way and not by rote. The reason your garden centre assistant couldn't multiply is because he doesn't have to use his knowledge in everyday situations, as we used to, so that it becomes very rusty. I never learnt my tables by rote, but I was always able to tackle maths problems because I could "see" them in spatial terms. I think this kind of skill - to visualise shape, space, patterns, relationships and number - is more useful in an age when the calculator can manage more mechanical tasks.ViewDate:

Did you watch Bodyguard on BBC?Compulsive viewing for me, and I will no doubt watch it again. Tense drama with lots of twists, but what I liked particularly was the human frailties and strengths of the main characters.ViewDate:
