LornaT13's bio
After 30+ years working in London and subsequent reduncancy, I recently graduated from University with a 2:1 honours degree in Sociology and History. Currently in a transitional period in deciding what to do next. I am single with no children but I share my home with my 2 dogs and 3 cats and also the latest addition being my 21yr old nephew Charlie following the loss of his mum (my sister).
I discovered Silversurfers through facebook and arriving at the conclusuon that I am now actually closer to 60 rather than 50, I felt that this is a community where I belong with people similar to myself. I haven't spent much time on here so far so I'm still learning but loving the content and information on offer. -

Are we on a countdown to chaos?Billythequiche you have summed it up perfectly in words that we all understand and have been thinking ourselves. Political correctness certainly is the malignant cancer in our society today, the responsibility of which can be laid at the door of the EU - so thank god we are almost free of them. However it has produced a generation of extreme left wing fantasists and activists who want to rob us of our freedoms and rights, as was clearly shown during the 3.5yrs of achingly painful Brexit behaviour and that is likely to be filtered down to the next generation or two before things can markedly change. We barely have any rights or freedoms left and the police have hardly any powers over us. I would really love to see major change during my lifetime for the better and being an independent country once again will be a start to achieving that but sadly it probably won't benefit our generations who were born prior to the 1990sViewDate:

Are we on a countdown to chaos?HilaryH5. Sadly irresponsible people are arriving at holiday destinations in droves. I live in the West Country and nothing has been open at all yet since the "loosening" of the lockdown rules, we have had camper vans and caravans in their droves turning up and just staying where they are parked up for as long as they choose to. I really don't understand their mentality because the only places that gave been open are quite literally the supermarkets and nothing else - there are not even any public toilets open so it doesn't take a genius to work out how they're coping with that! As locals we have all been on lockdown and abiding by the rules for the duration yet these selfish idiots who clearly believe the rules don't apply to them think nothing of doing exactly what they want without thought or consideration for anyone else. Even our very small police force have been unable to stem the tide. Fortunately these idiots are only a tiny minority in the scheme of things but they are the ones who will put others at risk and probably come out of it unscathed.ViewDate:

Will you download the tracing app when it becomes available? No, absolutely not! This is just another ruse by the powers that be to virtually track and trace people. They already have enough information about the individual population as it is and I’m not willing to provide them with anymore. This virus has been hyped up to hysterical levels when it is a fact that flu actually kills more people each year in the UK than this virus has. Plus, the death figures are skewed anyway because nobody knows for certain how reliable the current figures are, particularly as a very large majority who died during the crisis were not even seen by a doctor - their death was reported over the phone and symptoms similar to those of Covid-19 were listed as cause of death.ViewDate:

Are you drinking more alcohol during lockdown?Just because we are on lockdown, why do we need to drink more than usual?? Obviously there are those who drink regularly every day which will not change but fir the majority, I cannot understand why being in your own home would make anyone drink more. I’m a very occasional drinker, and I mean occasional - weddings, Christmas etc and if I have 2 drinks that’s a lot. Yes it’s nice being at home sitting out in the garden in this lovely weather but ice cold sparkling water or other cold non-alcoholic refreshment is more than enough for me. I am also eating much healthier as well because I have time to focus on what I’m eating and time to prepare it properly. Being at home in lockdown is a brilliant opportunity to do the things I’ve neglected to not had time to do and also to recharge my batteries and reassess my life when everything goes back to some kind or normality. I honestly do t understand why so many people are moaning about it. Most people are getting 80% of their pay and anyone on benefits are still getting their benefits and nobody is able to go out on spending sprees. What’s not to like? Just lay off the alcohol, there’s absolutely no resin for anyone to drink more!ViewDate:

Did Prince Andrew's Newsnight interview make his predicament better or worse?Spedders, whilst I agree with you in part, I cannot agree to victim shaming. Yes it is incumbent in the men to check but short of getting a copy of their birth certificates, what is a man supposed to do in such circumstances? Vet her through the channels of the local registry offices?? I am certainly not victim blaming as I acknowledge that there are many young girls who are taken advantage of but any girls under the age of 18yrs old should still be the responsibility of their parents or guardians and as such the responsibility of young girls flying around the world with millionaires and princes should be laid firmly at the door of the said parents or guardians. Over the age of 18 then the girls themselves have a choice. I say this because I feel very strongly that men are often the victims in such cases when women choose to shout rape or sexual abuse merely for their own interests whilst the men they are accusing are often not guilty of any offence yet it is those men whose names are dragged through the mud and are never able to fully recover from it. I say that as a woman who has seen and looks at both sides of any potential situations because I hate that men are constantly being demonised when young women don't get what they want and it makes a complete mockery of genuine rape and abuse cases.ViewDate:

Did Prince Andrew's Newsnight interview make his predicament better or worse?Thank you for that Ian. Whilst he pleaded guilty to the charges he also stated the he believed the girls to be over 18 and in this day and age I actually quite believe it highly likely that he could have been telling the truth. Have you seen how young girls dress these days?? I would be extremely worried if I were a man having to determine the ages of some girls - in addition to which, most of them will lie about their age anyway, especially if they thought they were going to sleep with a millionaire and a prince! I also note that a couple of multi-million dollar lawsuits were submitted prior to Epstein’s death - that alone actually explains quite a lot and speaks volumes. Child traffickers are. It usually millionaires or princes, they are usually unscrupulous gangs trafficking children from poor countries to the West. Sorry if I come across as cynical but as a woman, I have seen how many young women work these days and many would sell their souls for money and riches no matter what the consequences and in the US they know they can claim millions in damages and compensation thus leading to certain men sometimes finding themselves the victims of the scheming child women gold diggers. That is the side of the stories the press never report on. Not all men are scheming perverts but there are definitely many women who are scheming game hunters and gold diggers, especially in the US!!ViewDate:

Did Prince Andrew's Newsnight interview make his predicament better or worse?Am I the only person who seems to be missing something here?!.... The interview last night was laughable and Prince Andrew is so obviously as guilty as sin and he had clearly been told what to say and what not to say. - a very insincere and arrogant person who knows he can never be prosecuted, for perjury if nothing else. However, what I cannot grasp is WHY Epstein is a convicted paedophilic when this alleged victim was 17/18yrs old? She was over the age of consent and if what she says is true, she had the choice to say no and leave or even refuse to go in the first place. It seems as though the whole thing is being blown up bigger than what it is due to mass hysteria that the word paedophile actually evokes. I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong???ViewDate:

Should playing tag in the playground be banned in Primary Schools?Words fail me!! I just dread the thought of what type of people these children will grow up to become - will our armed forced die out as a result of soldiers not being allowed to fight in case they get hurt?? What about professional sports such as rugby and football? These would surely disappear as well because nobody will be allowed to make physical contact - bit of a problem in contact sports, particularly rugby! But then this school is in Brighton so be can only guess at what the head teacher actually "identifies" as hence the snowflake mentality. Such teachers should not be allowed to teach let alone run a school - what they are doing is called "indoctrination" and we all know how dangerous that is in today's modern diverse society... just let kids be kids and they might have a chance of growing into half decent adults.ViewDate:

Older people have far more life experience and understanding of the world and country we live in and as such is extremely important to pass down to the younger generations. If we are going to stop people voting the. It would be far more beneficial to stop everyone under the age of 25 from voting as most of that age group today have absolutely no common sense between them neither do they understand the realities of life because they live in a utopian bubble nurtured by the liberal left wing ideals which they are indoctrinated with from the moment they start state education! Do you support Boris's decision to suspend Parliament?Parliament has been debating this for the past 3 years without success and without being able to move forward for what the people voted for. This is the only option that will allow us to leave on the 31st May otherwise parliament will be debating, arguing and scheming for years to come. We had a democratic people's vote in 2016 - the people voted to leave - that is democracy. Whatever the opinions of the remain camp, a democratic vote must be respected, sadly Theresa May wasted 3 valuable years trying to,keep everyone happy but it did not work. Therefore we now have a prime minister who final,y has a backbone and is determined to honour the results of the referendum result and if proroguing is the only way to do it then that is exactly what has to be done. The country has had enough - we have to deliver Brexit but constant debating just isn't going to do it.ViewDate:

Should the Jeremy Kyle show be dropped?Yes I agree with you about the abuse but once again I have to reiterate that these ‘broken’ People CHOOSE to go on the show to air their dirty keundry in public knowing full well how he treats his guests on tv. Even broken people have to take responsibility for their own actions. Jk has not yet married the nanny and again as I’ve mentuoned previously, he has always been open and transparent with his private life, which he doesn’t necessarily need to do. The fact that his wife cheated on him and he moved in with Graham when the marriage collapsed says it all really. Personally I’m not interested in his private life - he got divorced and now he’s in another relationship SO WHAT?? It happens to the best of people so you can’t judge anyone for getting divorced and meeting a new partner. At least the broken people can now stay out of the public eye and try to sort their own lives out and that includes knocking out a child every year by a different boyfriend and getting off the drugs and alcohol. I recently lost a sister to alcohol abuse and the family suffered years of abuse from her as a result. We all tried desperately to help her as did her 3 sons who she left behind but she didn’t want any help because she never believed she had a problem. It is a selfish self-inflicted state and the main people who suffer are the family. So please DO NOT start shouting your do-Gooder message to me about self-inflicted addicts because I have witnessed it first hand and seen the destruction it causes to families. Let us not forget that JK did also help a lot of addicts where they recovered and other vulnerable people and children. The show has run its course and I’m certainly not sorry to see it finish but facts are facts and that is my main issue - acknowledging the facts.ViewDate:

Should the Jeremy Kyle show be dropped?Errrm I think you need to understand the facts before posting incorrect things on here. JK has always been completely open and transparent about his gambling addiction and how he overcame it. He has also openly shared his personal fight with testicular cancer so that men are aware of the signs. As for his "affair"??? JK did NOT have an affair - it was his ex-wife Carla who had the affair with her personal trainer whilst JK was away filming in the US. He didn't even start seeing the ex-nanny until a year or more after his divorce. The one thing you can never accuse the man of is deceiving the public or lying about his own personal issues - he has shared far more of himself with the public than he should have to. Moreover, if he had anything sinister to hide, don't you think, after 14 years, he might been exposed by now??ViewDate:

Should the Jeremy Kyle show be dropped?Just to correct you slightly, JK has not recorded in America for many years (I think he did 3 seasons over there) and compared to many of the shows the Americans have over there, JK is actually very tame by comparison. Every single person who has ever appeared on the JK show has done so through their own choice - nobody has ever been forced into it. They are well known for their after care to guests and they have done so many good things for many people and children who need help. People coming off drugs and alcohol, people finding long lost parents/family members, sick and vulnerable children being given some happiness and fun? And so the list goes on. In all of this, the public has failed to realise that the whole gem who work on the JK show are now going to be unemployed and they will all have mortgages/rent and bills to pay. I hear that there is now a public investigation going to take place on the whole of reality TV - bring it on so that finally British TV will finally be purged of all the vile car crash reality TV shows that are unacceptable and way past their sell by date!ViewDate:

Should the Jeremy Kyle show be dropped? No it should not be cancelled UNLESS they cancel all the other car crash reality TV as well - Love Island springs to mind where there have been 3 very recent suicides. All reality TV is there for the purpose of exploiting people for entertainment and monetary gain. However, having that, every single person who appears on reality TV and the JK show does so willingly through their own choice therefore those people have made a conscious decision to appear in front of TV cameras and are responsible for their own actions so nobody should have to take the blame for the actions of that person and let us not forget that suicide is a choice made by the person who commits it, for whatever reason. There is of course a huge problem with mental health in the UK and that links into reality TV and other commercial money making vessels. The guest who committed suicide clearly had mental health problems before he went on the JK show, which is the reason he was there in the first place. So I don't see why JK is being scapegoated when there is so much other questionable trash on our TV. We need properly funded and high quality mental health care in the UK provided by the NHS and NOT by private companies and if there was adequate mental health care then people wouldn't be forced into appearing on car crash TV which only benefits the TV stations and the presenters. In cancelling JK, please let us see the cancellation of the rest of the dross on TV with immediate effect!ViewDate:

Should schools bring back afternoon breaks? And therein lies the problem... School days should be from 9am-4pm with a 20 minute break morning and afternoon together with one hour for lunch. The school day is getting shorter which is wrong and completely detrimental to adequate learning. Children should do school work during school hours and NOT pile the kids up with ridiculous amounts of homework - school and home life should be completely separate. You don't go to work expecting to take your work home with you so why should children be forced to. Some of the homework they get is beyond a joke and they need to be doing that workmin school with a qualified teacher in a class room setting so that they can ask questions and interact with other class members so that they all learn together. The teachers need to stop whingeing and moaning about themselves - they chose teaching as a profession - and completely focus on the children they are teaching during school hours. Why in earth schools think it is acceptable to send them home at 2.00-2.30pm is beyond me and is doing nothing more than cheating them out of properly taught education which thus country has a duty to provide.ViewDate:

Should schools bring back afternoon breaks?Yes they should absolutely have longer breaks both in the morning and afternoon so that they can play, exercise and interact with other kids. School days seem to be getting shorter and in my local area they finish school at 2.30pm! Whatever happened to the 9am-4pm school hours with proper breaks? They need a full school day with 3 proper breaks so that they can do their school work IN the classroom and not be forced to take it home where they seem to be increasingly doing more work at home and less in school. And what about these teacher training days??? WHY, for example, after 6 weeks off during the summer, do teachers need even more time off for teacher training days/inset days etc?! With the amount of school holidays every year which is around 14 weeks, surely teacher training can be done within the parameters of term time? I.e after school or a day over the weekend?? Children’s education is constantly being compromised because of these days given to teachers which inevitably causes even MORE homework and added pressures to working parents who cannot always get extra childcare on those days?! From an employer’s perspective, they could potentially lose half their workforce on a teacher training day through lack of childcare facilities. The list goes on and every single point I have made is detrimental to the children who this country has a duty to educate. Additionally they should not be allowed to take their phones to school which are hugely distracting therefore giving them quality time away from technology. Teachers eintblike it as it will extent their day but in my opinion, school is about teaching children NOT about appeasing militant teachers. No wonder more parents are choosing to home school their kids. In the 60s/70s we did full school days with proper breaks. We certainly did not have ridiculous amounts of homework thrust upon us AND where I lived, we walked 2 miles to/from school (each way) every day without suffering any ill effects from it.ViewDate:

Is a bad deal better than remaining in the European Union?A No Deal would be far better than a Bad Deal, which the PM herself stated at the very beginning, probably the only true thing she has actually said but has clearly done a complete U-turn on that. If we were to leave with a No Deal, it would give us the strongest negotiating power ever because the ball would then be in our court and not that of the EU. The electorate voted to LEAVE in 2016 and that vote should be completely and democratically honoured whether with or without a deal. This whole negotiations process has been completely highjacked by the liberal left and the media as well as our own politicians, each for their own agendas. The voice of the people has been completely ignored and they have been treated appallingly. There should be no more delaying tactics - we MUST leave at 11pm on the 29th March without a deal rather than a bad deal. It should not be up to the government to even argue about this - the people voted to leave, Article 50 was triggered and signed by HM the Queen and is therefore legally binding. There should be NO extension then on the 30th March Theresa May needs to resign or call a General election and only a Brexiteer should then be voted into No.10 before post-Brexit negotiations can commence. It isn't rocket science - we cannot get a good deal therefore the negotiations are finished and we have to move on to the next level - without agreement of Westminster if that's what it takes.ViewDate:

Myself and many others are sick to death of being accused by the remain camp that we did not know what we were voting for as if we are a bunch of uneducated idiots!! how do you know that the remainders knew what they were voting for?? From a lot of what I've read and heard in discussions since the referendum, the remain camp seems far more clueless than the leave camp and this constant barrage by "project fear" only goes to prove that the remainers really do not know as much as they think they do. The problem is that the remainers in high places standvto lose a lot of mo eye and status when we leave - the gravy train that MEPs have enjoyed and taken full advantage of over the years is going to dry up whilst Britain as a country will be free to trade with whoever we choose to. Today's millennial generation have been indoctrinated by loony left wing liberal ideas since they started primary school and this has been the same all through their education and into university. I was recently a mature university student and I was horrified at the way today's generation are being educated by a bunch of left wing liberal educators - during my 4 years at university I never met one single right wing lecturer or educator (and yes, I certainly had some very interesting discussions and debates...). People are individual and hey each have the gift of their own opinions and self expression but sadly, just like the extreme Muslim fundamentalists, they are being indoctrinated with information which is not correct and has been twisted into the type of information that the government and the new world order want to control them with. The irony of this us that if is those who voted Leave who know exactly what they are talking about and the real reasons why we need to leave the EU and nothing that myself or any other Leaver voted for has ever been based on a lie. Many of us were around before we joined the EU, which we did not want at the time and 40 years of corruption and lies have more than proved is right. Should a statue of Margaret Thatcher be erected in her home town?Yes SusieB100 you are absolutely right. So many people do not realise that there were far more mines closed down under Wilson’s labour government in the 1960s than at any time since and I have stated that earlier in this conversation thread. I cannot understand why some people are just so ignorant when it comes to documented facts. Scargill was the main cause of much of the propaganda and strikes during the 80s together with the might of the unions who, thank god, lost much of their control under Margaret Thatcher and quite rightly so - they had held our country to ransom for far too long and destroyed many of our British industries, particularly the car industry - remember British Leyland?!. Sadly since her time in office, we have not had one politician who has even come close to Mrs Thatcher and the complete shambles we are witnessing now is not the result of any one individual politician but more the change in politics as a whole and everyone wanting to be “career politicians” making money hand over fist in the corrupt EU rather than caring about and working for the electorate of this country. Leaving the corrupt EU can only be a positive move for Britain and the strongest will survive. Mrs Thatcher would have had any deal done and dusted within 12 months of the referendum and we would not be witnessing the current shambolic and embarrassing behaviour of our current day politicians. She left a fantastic legacy to this country and I hope that during my lifetime I will witness the upturn in British politics and see the ‘Great’ put back into Britain for the benefit of the generations to come -
