Silversurfers Book Club Winter 2018The Child book review When a paragraph in an evening newspaper reveals a decades-old tragedy, most readers barely give it a glance. But for three strangers it’s impossible to ignore. For one woman, it’s a reminder of the worst thing that ever happened to her. For another, it reveals the dangerous possibility that her darkest secret is about to be discovered. And for the third, a journalist, it’s the first clue in a hunt to uncover the truth. This novel is told from four women's perspectives Emma, Angela, Kate, and Jude, past and present. EMMA has secrets and works from home as a book editor. She is married to Paul a teacher at the University. Emma suffers from anxiety and is on medication. ANGELA’s new-born baby, Alice was kidnapped from the maternity ward 30 years ago and was never found. Angela never recovered from the trauma. She had been a nurse and was married to Nick, with and 2 adult children Patrick and Louise, who have left home. KATE is a reporter for the Daily Post married to Steve, a doctor with two adult sons. Kate is fascinated with this story and decides to try and uncover the story behind the remains. This was something to get her out of the office. JUDE is Emma’s distant mother who is obsessed with her boyfriend, Will. Jude along with Will threw Emma out of their house when she was just 16 years old. Only Will was important to her, not her daughter. If I am brutally honest “The Child” is slow going at first and too long a story that would have benefited from a ruthless red-pencil. Having said that once you get into it, it is engrossing. This is an expertly executed thriller, full of gritty authentic detail, is made even better by a killer twist that will catch you off guard. OMG I didn’t see that coming. I was probably too immersed in the story line.ViewDate:

Silversurfers Book Club Winter 2018Faking friends review Your best friend stole your fiancé. Do you run away and hide, or start planning your revenge? Amy thought she knew everything there was to know about her best friend Melissa (Mel) Then again, Amy also thought she was on the verge of the wedding of her dreams to her long-distance fiancé. (Jack) Until she pays a surprise trip home to London. Jack is out, but it's clear another woman has been making herself at home in their flat. There's something about her stuff that feels oddly familiar. After leaving her flat and then going onto Mel's birthday party she realises the scent in their home belongs her very best two-faced friend Mel. From here the tension cranks up enormously and it is very hard to put this book down! One thing after another, the plot is laid to get payback, and it’s brilliant! Along the way, we learn about the back story to Amy and Mel’s friendship and I could not read fast enough to find out what happens next. I can honestly say this is unique to any other novel. Amy has lost her home, her fiancé and her best friend in one disastrous weekend - but instead of falling apart, she's determined to get her own back. Piecing her life back together won't be half as fun as dismantling theirs, after all. I raced through Jane Fallon's delicious new page-turner about friends behaving badly. It's unpredictable and feisty, with a lead character that's a long way from the average romantic heroine. I started this on Saturday and finished it by Sunday afternoon, I absolutely loved it and just couldn't put it down. This is the best book I have read for a long time Finally am I the last person to know that Jane Fallon has been the better half of Ricky Gervais for 35 years!!! I’ll get back under my rock. Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for a fair and honest review
