Does the thought of families being allowed to mix over Christmas make you feel anxious or relieved?I am very relieved as I have not seen my son and his partner for 6 months - this is the only time of the year when we can get together with my daughter - there will be 6 of us, and we are all being very sensible. I believe we, as older people, are generally intelligent enough to ensure our own safety. My anxiety levels were going through the roof thinking that I would not see them. I don't want to be one of the growing band of people who are too scared to leave their homes. I don't expect everyone to feel the same, but that's fine - so far, we still have freedom of speech, if not action. xViewDate:

Would you welcome a 'circuit-breaker'?I have said 'no' to a circuit breaker as all avenues taken so far seem to have left certain segments of society with no choice but to lock themselves away, frightened of life itself; whilst those spreading the virus continue with their lives as though nothing is happening. Surely, the vulnerable are taking the steps they need to to ensure their own safety, and have the sense to continue to do so? My gut feeling is that the lockdown will come again, some people will panic, some will ignore it and we will all suffer in some way or another. My heart goes out to people whose family members are, in essence, being held hostage in care homes, with their dementia meaning they do not understand what is happening, and why they never have any visitors. This is hard on all concerned - if people can still go to a pub, which now has to be termed a 'restaurant' why can't children see their parents in care homes, when they would take all the care needed to safeguard their welfare. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be one answer as to how to control the virus, as even New Zealand and Australia have found that as soon as tough measures are loosened, it rears its ugly head. So, what can we do, other than be sensible and try to help those who really need it. Good luck everyone.ViewDate:

Have you changed your shopping habits to avoid plastic?Surely wrapping vegetables in plastic must cost more than leaving them without it? Broccoli heads in plastic - come on!!ViewDate:

My Childhood part three - schooling, the early yearsYet another chapter on life back then. Perhaps todays younger generations should read your recollections, then be grateful for their (generally) much easier lives. We all adapt to what life is, with maybe greater expectations as to what we 'deserve'. Great piece Eric - thank you.ViewDate:

Which is better for the environment - a real fir or a plastic spruce? The felled Christmas trees are automatically replaced with new saplings, which apparently provide better effects whilst they are young and growing, these then slow down as the tree gets older - I know how that feels !!!!ViewDate:

Will you be sending Christmas cards this year? For the last few years I have sent very few cards - cost and laziness! However, now that my son lives in Denmark, my daughter in Brighton, this year I asked him to design a card representing where we all are (he is a graphic designer). The result is a beautiful and meaningful card which I will be sending to family and friends. I will also get great pleasure from writing individual messages in each one.ViewDate:

My childhood in the fiftiesA lovely recollection of bygone days - maybe 'lovely' isn't quite the right word, for you mother anyway! Although there were only 4 of us, my remembrances are very similar - what a life for women. The 'ice on the inside of bedroom windows' has stood me in good stead - I do not need central heating on in my bedroom, and I sleep with the window open - even last night when the first real frost hit home. Ok, so my nose is a tad cold, but so what? The air is fresh and clean, and my bills are low!! I can't wait to hear the next instalment of your story Eric. Keep it coming.ViewDate:
