anneridgway's bio
Done lots of all sorts in my time. Worked as a nurse for 5 years and since have done shop work and office administration. Am now retired but have recently started to work in the community as a 'Support Worker', keeping elderly people company in their homes on a regular weekly basis, which enables them to continue living at home. I'm divorced but have a live in partner. I do not have children but I have a brother, two nieces, a nephew in law and a great niece. I go to a local knit and natter group and enjoy crosswords (not the hard ones), jigsaw puzzles, television, reading and cross stitch. -

Remembering the Big Freeze of 1963I was 8 in 1962 and our family lived at the top end of a cul-de-sac of 20 houses. All the children in our street made a slide of the road from one end to the other and cars had a devil of a time trying to get in and out, so I don't think we were too popular. There weren't many cars at that time, but one of the dad's in the street had a Morris Traveller, and he used to put as many kids as he could into the back and take us to school. We didn't miss a single day. My neighbour now is 87 and she had her first child in November 1962. She said she had to go out and shop, but wasn't willing to take a tiny child out in it, so she used to wrap him up warmly and pass him over the back fence to her neighbour until she got home again. She also said that her and her husband only had a coal fire, so could only afford to heat the living room, so they lived in that one room until the thaw. I remember net curtains being stuck with ice to the insides of the windows and mum putting our clothes on the fire guard to get warm while we had some breakfast - then we threw our clothes on as fast as we could before they went cold again.ViewDate:

Win one of THREE Halo Capsule cordless vacuum cleaners worth over £350 each!I would so love to win this. I've had a cordless before (a Dyson), but it was heavy to handle as I have arthritis in my hands. Also emptying vacuums is awful because of Asthma and COPD. One of these sounds as though it would be perfect for me and although I wish every other entrant the best of luck, I hope that on this occasion I am lucky too.ViewDate:

What are your views on TV Charity Begging Adverts?I agree with you with regard to all the TV ads. I'm now at the stage of muting them and going to make a cup of tea! I always felt guilty for doing that, but frankly I don't anymore. At this time of the year I do my bit for charity by sitting in a supermarket for a week or two behind a table full of poppies, selling them for Royal British Legion. The rest of the time I am happy to put money in tins and buy odds and ends from the charity shops that are now littering our high streets and town centres. I won't even send money to charities any more. Once you do they've got your details and you find yourself being bombarded by mail and email. As far as I'm concerned, they've all shot themselves in the foot. Instead of making us care and want to help they've just alienated us.ViewDate:

What are your views on TV Charity Begging Adverts?I totally agree that all the charity, gambling and funeral ads should be removed from the box; also that people living here should come first for a change.ViewDate:

Talking on the phone during a family meal. OK ....or not?Hello. I don't think answering your home phone is rude, but if it's not an urgent call I think it's only polite to explain to the caller that you are busy at the moment and either ask them to call back, or tell them you'll call them later. That seems to me to be the polite thing to do.ViewDate:

5 of our best loved children’s TV programmes of the 1960sI remember all of these! I think my era was more Pinky and Perky / The Woodentops / Tales from the River Bank / and Muffin the Mule. The others came a bit later. My mum loved Trumpton and watched every time it was on; and we couldn't have tea until dad had watched The Magic Roundabout. Happy times.ViewDate:

Win a H-HANDY 700 Express from HooverI'd love one of these. Hoovers of any sort are difficult with arthritis, so it looks as though it would be perfect for me - especially for those pesky stairs!!!ViewDate:

Memorable TV Adverts – which is your favourite?Loved Maureen Lipman with the 'ology', but they were all so good. Today's ads might be more 'tech savvy' but I'm sure we took more notice of the old fashioned ones - they were as good as the programmes!ViewDate:

Step back in time: to 1955I was born in July 1954 so don't actually 'remember' any of these things happening. However, over the years you hear the music of that time and the political decisions made then filter through so you find yourself nodding in remembrance!!! Everything looks so OLD. Then I remember that I'm nearly 66, my parents didn't have a telly until around '64, a car until around '65 and a telephone until about '67 or '68. Doesn't time fly???ViewDate:
