6 things that happen 48 hours after quittingGave up smoking in 2013. Was an on and off smoker for years. The withdrawal symptoms are hard as your cravings are powerful. But what I found the hardest was the coughing. Now when I see someone smoking I think to myself that was me and now I'm glad I stopped. Look up the ingredients in cigarettes and you'll see it's a slow poison. I hear people say they feel they need to do something with their hands; try taking up origami or buy a fidget toy to occupy your hands. Something to distract your train of thought. Staying off cigarettes will be the best thing you can do EVER.ViewDate:

People Have Forgotten How To Be Friends...Quite agree! At last someone who has a similar viewpoint to myself. Friends are meant to look out for each other, be there for one another and be happy to interact but today 'nothing'. I say 'acquaintances' now. As friends are people you can rely on; pick up where you left off; have a laugh; have a moan and put the world to rights! Not someone who is just a name and there is no interaction no contact; that is not friendship but acquaintanceship. So I don't rely on anyone but myself. I keep me to myself as I've learnt people only want you when you are of some use or want something from you. Rest of the time you never hear from them. Also when you tell them that FRIENDSHIP is a two way street they agree with you but never contact you! HOW WEIRD! I'm not saying behave like a spouse but even once a week for a catch up. But I'll be darned if they pay any attention. So I stop chasing people. I stop contact if they don't interact!ViewDate:

Is anyone out there liking cats as petsI've had cats most of my life. But when my last two cats passed I refrained from anymore. However, since moving to a new flat there is a neighbours cat that makes himself known. He is a welcomed visitor and comes and goes as he pleases. Is lovely to have him around. He has 3 homes including his own that he wanders into. Sometimes is a matter of he has his treats and then he hops out the door again. Sometimes he sleeps all day then disappears out the door late on.ViewDate:

Should HRT prescription charges be scrapped?Been going through menopause for few years now. It's dreadful. As for the doctors everything is just 'played down' and you feel you are not taken seriously. So I suffer in silence.ViewDate:

Does anyone eat spam these days?Don't knock it till you've tried it! I don't eat spam but I know I wouldn't turn my nose up at it if it was in desperate times. When hungry and you don't have enough food to live on you look to save money wherever you can. For some it is disgusting but you'd eat it if you didn't know what it was! A meal is that a meal with whatever little you have. Be grateful.ViewDate:

Is modern technology really anti-social? Does it get in the way of real, old-fashioned conversation? What do you think and are your experiences.Quite agree. Trades and young people need to have a holiday together, lol! So to speak. Things like carpentry, metal work skills, Technical drawing, cobbling. Hands on skills but as much as they are 'skills' it's a brick wall when an employer uses robots to replace the human behind the till or the factory shop floor. Even operators are now 'automation'. (which is highly irritable) we don't all fit into a box. Understand things move on but I wonder how many young people would even know how to build a coal fire today LOL! (I know coal is out) Go karts use to be the thing we'd build. Out to find a set of pram wheels and planks of wood but the most important piece would be the steering bold! LOL! we'd play 'ollies' (marbles) in the school yard on the grate. Steelies we'd call cheating! LOL!ViewDate:

Is modern technology really anti-social? Does it get in the way of real, old-fashioned conversation? What do you think and are your experiences. Is just sticking to the old rules of being present when someone is talking to you; put your phone in your pocket. Be present in the moment. Not engrossed in your phone or tablet. If meals are ready put tech away go and enjoy your meal with family or friends and check emails/text later. If it's urgent you can change a ringtone or email alert so you instantly know that it's 'urgent' otherwise 'do it later' when people are trying to talk to you there is nothing more (in my opinion) 'rude' and 'disrespectful' than ignoring the person talking in front of you - for you to answer a text or email. Seriously we all had to wait outside a telephone box when we had to make calls. We had to wait till we got home to make a phone call or listen to messages. Not saying tech is 'bad' but be respectful, be aware of your surroundings, and perhaps sore necks and thumbs will 'ease' as texter's thumb and screen neck are so common place today. Because we're always looking 'down' and the joints in our thumbs were not made to 'text' 24/7. I love technology; but it has it's place. not to 'replace' human conversation.ViewDate:

Lost at sea - [DELETED_MEMBER]Hi Des58! I understand you wanting the distraction of talking about anything else accept the elephant in the room. It's devastatingly hard to see blue in a sky that is grey. So you look to think of something different. I found learning ORIGAMI is quite effective for taking your mind off things; as it helped me give up smoking. I started out making the origami box https://youtu.be/Cd5Z8hmcb10 then the origami heart https://youtu.be/Z-BIL6p1Te8 Then the origami butterfly https://youtu.be/mfI3MIbbkgM Origami is the Japanese art of folding paper. I use any type paper. and always keep a square bit of paper somewhere in a pocket or jacket. Helps when waiting in a corridor or waiting room. Or alternatively there is games on here you could try. Is just some 'other kind' of distraction to take your mind off the here and now. I'm sorry you and your wife are going through this. but hoping things turn out for the better, Des58! What are your views on TV Charity Begging Adverts?Quite agree JackieBrown. Understand that the advertising is national but like you say is the top hierachy that get the benefit. Is so much money that goes on 'admin' or 'ceo' costs. Charity is exactly that 'Charity' I feel that the people who do run the charities should do that job for 'half the price of their salary/wage'. Other thing that bugs me is there is NEVER EVER any update on what has been done in what country etc; how much raised, How much needed. But for the general joe bloggs we are expected to just blindly 'GIVE GIVE GIVE'. Also the fact that once you start giving to a charity ie: £3 a month the next month it's give £5 and so on and so forth. If I was to give £3 to every charity that asked I'd be 6ft under!ViewDate:

Too many people fall for these scams and did you know it's illegal to use someone's email WITHOUT their permission? Funeral - what would you do?Who attends a funeral is entirely up to the individual. Irrelevant of family and what they think. Is entirely the individuals choice on what they do, Some people prefer to remember the person as they knew them not as how they are now. It's hard but it's entirely up to the individual. You can arrange to say your last goodbyes in your own way. It's hard when reality hits and you feel 'obliged' but is how YOU want to remember them.ViewDate:

Lonely and vulnerable and looking to chatHello KiaraR I'm fairly new to SS. How are you coping today? What part of Scotland you from? My mum came from Glasgow. I miss hearing the accent. I understand where you are coming from as is a question I've often asked in past. But with all scare mongering that has been happening with government and covid people are afraid to 'interact' outside of their own home bubble with people. I miss the interaction of people in passing and chatting. People I find don't want to stop but just to carry on walking. Unless you are at a bottle neck in the road where some just ignore you as are anxious to pass. Here's hoping you've not disappeared off the forum!ViewDate:

Do you feel ready for the last remaining Covid restrictions to end?In addition.......what makes it even more infuriating is the amount of scams that have came about through this. Text messages about lateral flow tests and pay a pound postage; lateral flow test are sent through the NHS. Not by some scammer! It infuriates me people who prey on the vulnerable! ALL BECAUSE OF that idiot in power!!!!!!!ViewDate:

New Member saying hello - [DELETED_MEMBER]Hello Kasbah, Hope you found some new friends here. I'm 53 and live down in West Sussex. I understand how this isolation has proven difficult for many, myself included. Being stuck indoors I find myself looking for more interaction with people through the internet. No one should be alone and is good that you have joined Silver surfers. There is plenty to explore on here. Pen pals included. I found this website as it popped up on FB so decided to explore more about what it was about. Feel free to chat anytime.ViewDate:

Morning from a silver-surfing Yorkshire lass who is spending too many days not speaking to anyone - but the walls.Hello Lottiebell, I've only just joined and been jumping in to various things! I can relate when you say isolation. No sooner we're starting to 'communicate' outside and start to feel a bit normal then things go backwards! I'm 53 in between jobs at moment. Don't have kids. Good job as just getting over a 17yr breakup. so double whammy! What did you teach Lottiebell? Who did you teach? I've just purchased a book called The Freedom Writers Diary. I purchased it after I'd saw the film which was by chance! Good film so book should be better. The other book I've got on the go is called 'Flatshare' - Beth O'Leary I've been on the games page and it past a couple of hours....I love walking too but not in wind and rain; don't like the sky when it seems someone has turned off all the lights....put 50p in the meter and brighten things up! LOL! LOL=laughs out loud! I have all the lights on when it gets like that and keep the curtains closed. What do you plan to grow on your allotment? Trying to get an allotment where I am 'down south' is like 'gold dust'. You say your children are now out in the world and you wouldn't dream of bothering them - you should give them a nudge and say I'm due a visit this week! See what they say! LOL! what about private tutoring? that is if your love of teaching hasn't gone out the window! Or you giving yourself the much needed rest from it all?ViewDate:

Music Taste - I love Country songs - what about you?Sing me an old fashioned song - Billy Jo Spears. Love this tune. Reminds me of when I use to go on pub crawls with friends from my local. We'd end up in a 'lock-in' and this would for sure be on the juke box! I have quite an eclectic taste in music. My era is the 80's but love most music anywhere from pop to classical to funk to Jazz. Just bought Classic Diamonds With The London Symphony Orchestra - Neil Diamond. Wonderful. As for blues, Beth Hart is another great singer also the Teskey Brothers. Music gets me through the darkest of times.ViewDate:

Television sound qualitySometimes this is the actual programme sound level. It's annoying at best! Makes a person think they're hard of hearing! I have a sound bar and sometimes have the volume up as high as number 13 due to programme low volume output. Then the music comes into play it 'blasts out' and it's a rush to lower the volume. Think twice before setting out to buy any new equipment.ViewDate:
