Are we alone in the universe?I recall a line from the movie Contact where the young daughter asked her Dad did he think that there is life out there. He stated that it would be an awful waste if there isn't any. I feel that was a good reply. Considering the unimaginable size of our universe and the billions upon billions of stars and planets, there has to be a multitude of life forms in this universe. The problem with any contact with these life forms is the incredible distances between even the closest stars. We are over 4 light-years away from our nearest star, a distance that would take more than a thousand years to cross with a spacecraft that could go 100,00 miles per hour. We haven't developed a spacecraft that could reach even that velocity yet. Contact by electromagnetic radiation is the best bet. Even the odds of this happening seem slim given the immense size of the universe and the distances involved. We are trying with no luck so far. Perhaps there is a Star Trek solution to this problem developed by some advanced life form. :)
