Should all Christmas parties be off this year?Vaccinations are a key component. They protect, not absolutely, but will reduce the symptoms and reduce the overall effect of the virus and afford some protection which in turn will reduce the transmission throughout society.. I get so annoyed when certain people protest that it is their right to refuse to be vaccinated. Forget about your "rights", what about your responsibilities to yourselves, to those who have underlying health conditions and to society as a whole? Refusing to be vaccinated is the height of selfishness.ViewDate:

Should all Christmas parties be off this year?We cannot and will not ever get rid of COVID. We have to learn to live with it. Knee-jerk reactions every time a new variant is unearthed will not achieve "getting rid of Covid" I would have thought that the authorities had learnt the lesson by now - that lockdowns, even partial ones, do not get rid of the virus and only serve to frustrate and antagonise the public. They do this country harm, economically, commercially, socially, educationally and mentally. In addition, It doesn't help when the authorities are so clearly not doing what they preach. They need to be far more transparent, understandable and honest about dealing with any measure they think fit. But at the moment the regulations are a complete jumble, a total mishmash. How is it that it's not OK to go to work but OK to party. How much more rubbish can this government dish out before it gets chucked out. I am sceptical of any politician but this lot are beyond belief.ViewDate:

Should controversial statues around the country be removed?Simply because some of these characters from the past did not apply 2020 values to their activities doesn't mean we remove them. They represent our history and without them there to remind us of what they did (and there was nearly always some good as well the more publicised bad activities) then we will never learn from our previous mistakes. To those who want to sweep away the past, argue that they should be removed by all means but NEVER take the law into your own hands and commit criminal damage. That is unacceptable and reprehensible and should be punished.ViewDate:

Is it sensible to allow specified year groups back to school?Yes. On the evidence available both from here in UK and from overseas, particularly from European countries, it seems that children are NOT carriers of the coronavirus and also constitute the population group that are least likely to be affected by the virus, many not catching it all. Primary schools could re-open immediately. It is generally reckoned by the scientific experts that staff will probably have a substantially greater risk of contracting the disease from the staff room than from the class room. The teachers need to learn to distance themselves from each other rather than from the children.ViewDate:

Don’t Let the Music Stop!I was just about to start rehearsals with a new band when the lockdown came into force. We had decided to cancel because our drummer suffered from COPD and had just recovered from cancer treatment and he looked after his mum who also suffered from COPD. Two days later the lockdown was announced. So now we are waiting until later in the year. It was going to be a blues band and we had a draft repertoire all lined up. Something to look forward to hopefully maybe in September or October. I'm in my mid 70s, the oldest in the band, and I've been playing since my pre-teens. It keeps me young, young at heart and young in mind and can recommend playing in a band or group or even an orchestra because there's nothing like the buzz you get when playing in front of an audience and being appreciated.ViewDate:

Is it realistic to expect over 70s to remain in their homes for 4 months?Form one extreme to another!!! For weeks the government has been following a policy "to flatten the curve" i.e. so that the NHS can cope by spreading the number of those infected and having problems over a longer period of time. Now, however, it seems that we may all have to pay the price by being prisoners in our own homes for an extended period which is completely unrealistic. Although over 70, I am still working, albeit in a self-employed, semi-retired capacity . . . . .and I'm not the only one!! I'm not worried about catching COVID-19 because, although 76, I am in pretty good health with no undelying problems (apart from my sciatica!) and IF I catch it, I don't think I will have much more than a temperature and sore throat for a few days. I say IF because I can minimise the risk by taking sensible precautions, particularly by frequently washing or cleaning my hands. NOTE HERE - face masks are a waste of time. The virus does not float about in the air., it is largely transmitted by touch. If you are working in close quarters with those who have already been tested positive then they are essential for protection from patients' coughs and sneezes. No, I will not obey any order which restricts me to my home for 4 months. It is unrealistic to expect that millions can just sit there doing nothing. I'm off to the pub.ViewDate:

Should we rule out imported chlorinated chicken from the USA?I think a key issue is what we, as a country, are prepared to accept. Now it is possible that vested interests may not provide the best solution, i.e. either UK farmers may successfully lobby for high standards which will push up the price or a trade deal with USA will include some relaxation to their standards which could lower food costs. Which do you want? Looking at the overall result of the response to this question it would appear that most of those who have responded are against the import of chlorinated chicken. How much that has been generated by outspoken media is difficult to tell but it may well result in higher prices. Are you prepared to pay the increase? The Americans love their chicken to be "corn fed" giving the cooked meat a distinctly yellow appearance whereas UK chicken is almost white. This is not to be confused with the process of chlorination. Personally, if chlorinated chicken is permitted to be imported, then I would peruse the shop shelves until I found some that was labelled "Reared in UK" as I prefer to support our own farming industry.ViewDate:

After having read through the "Deal" that Boris has presented and the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement, I can say in all honesty that hardly anything has changed since Mrs May's so-called deal was booted out of the Commons three times. Let's all vote for the Brexit party, get a wholesale change of people in Westminster and get a clean break with the EU. They don't want us to leave and it should be pretty obvious that they have, are doing so and will continue to make it as difficult as possible for the UK to leave. They must be laughing all the way in Brussels about the turmoil in Westminster. Mind you, what they are seeing are the pains of democracy at work, something of which the the EU knows little. Don't forget, in Blackpool 63% of the electorate voted to leave yet we have 2 MPS who have both voted against leaving. Time for a change!!!ViewDate:

Do you think the tactics of Extinction Rebellion are justified? The change in lifestyle required to offset natural phenomena which may, or may not, lead to the earth warming up to an intolerable level, would be unobtainable. Even if the entirety of mankind were to achieve and adopt a "carbon neutral" lifestyle, it would still be insufficient to reverse the current trend. Instead of running around like headless chickens bleating about taking action to reverse climate change we should be changing our lifestyles so that we can exist on a warmer earth. The future is not catastrophic but it may become a bit uncomfortable. We need to devise carbon absorbing systems. This includes planting trees by the billions, cultivating the Sahara, replanting the tropical forests (the governments of Brazil and Indonesia should be charged with crimes against humanity for allowing the destruction of the Amazon and other tropical forests). In addition there a number of methods of undertaking carbon dioxide absorption utilising different chemicals but, as yet, these need further development. I repeat, climate change is not the end of the world nor a catastrophic future. It is a challenge to mankind.ViewDate:

Do you think the tactics of Extinction Rebellion are justified? On the question of Climate Change, there is a lot of rubbish talked about it. Some time ago I posted on Facebook some facts about pollution and greenhouse gases. Did you know it only takes one volcanic eruption to push the same amount of methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that is produced by 80% of the world's dairy cattle? And did you know it only takes one journey by a container ship from Australia to UK to produce as much pollutant as the entire 38 million vehicles in the UK do in a year!!! When there's a problem, as in this case too much greenhouse gas being produced wouldn't it be sensible to tackle the major generators first. OK you can't stop volcanic eruptions but the combustion of bunker oil by shipping has to be a priority for change. Another point worth noting is that back in the 16th century, apparently the earth's climate was considerably warmer than it is today. Maybe the Seychelles didn't exist then as they were still under water but somehow mankind more than managed to live!! Climate change is not the end of the world.ViewDate:

Is a 'stiff-upper-lip' mentality partially to blame for today's mental health problems?I know I wrote a piece earlier but after reading the comments that have come in since I can't help but ask a few questions and I would be grateful if someone can answer them - 1. What exactly do we mean by mental health? 2. Is it any different to mental attitude? 3. Why are we so preoccupied with mental health issues these days? Are they on the increase or do they just get more publicity? 4. Or are we looking for answers to the problems of terrorism , knife crime, etc. as being explained by the culprits suffering from mental health problems? It seems to me that currently there is a wave of opinion which wants to decree we are a caring nation and that our behaviour and attitudes needs to change to fit in with that presumption and that care for the "mentally displaced" needs to be part of that. The problem is that those who are classed as dinosaurs, i.e. those who were familiar with the "stiff upper lip" approach, get pilloried as being incompatible with our beloved new "caring society". I find this very disconcerting because those who support the new caring society are themselves becoming intolerant. Eventually all "dinosaurs" will be classed as having mental problems and be re-conditioned so as to fit in with the new society. Shades of thought control and 1984 all over again??ViewDate:

Is a 'stiff-upper-lip' mentality partially to blame for today's mental health problems? Now I've heard just about everything!! It seems that a large slice of our society are intent on blaming anything else except their own incompetence or shortcomings. On my last contract with a major construction and consultancy company, we had an office talk in which mental health was given as much priority as physical well-being which to begin with sounded reasonable. However as the presented proceeded I began to feel more and more that the issue was being used an excuse. If the workforce didn't do well then there must be something wrong with their mental health. No way. We have already entered into the era of everyone being offended which, according to some pundits, is a representation of a certain type of mental illness. So you're offended; my response is typically "hard cheese". When I came back from Saudi Arabia where I been working for 12 months I had problems leaving because my visa had expired by 2 days. In the end it took me a further 10 days and a fine of £50,000 in order to exit. I was naturally rather annoyed and get it off my chest I concocted a note in the form of a newspaper front page in which I liberally used the F word. In jest I emailed to some colleagues in my business with the result that the next time I was due to attend a regional meeting I received an email requesting that I did not attend. Certain members of the group had been "offended" by my note. My reaction? I replied with a newspaper article in which a psychologist claimed that it was good to say F-word because it helps you get the problem out of your system. Should there be a specified age to retake your practical driving test? It's been very interesting reading through the replies. It certainly shows that the subject has a wide interest and is of concern to many. A few points that emerge from the replies are - 1. The majority seem to be in favour of some form of repeated medical checks 2. Many would not be averse to re-testing. This could be applied throughout one's entire driving life 3. There are instances, particularly in rural areas and families with disabled people that perhaps rely more on individual mobility than others and to whom the loss of a car would be life-changing 4. A very sound proposal, that of insurance companies offering a reduction in premium if an older driver has a current medical certificate showing confirmed physical ability to drive. Perhaps Silversurfers could undertake a full and proper survey using SurveyMonkey, publicise the results and send them to the DfT and motoring organisations such as RAC and Brake. The outcome could be incorporated into future national road safety policies and strategies.ViewDate:

Should there be a specified age to retake your practical driving test? It's an interesting topic particularly as I have been and am still involved in road safety for the past 40+ years. Statistics show that elderly drivers, i.e those over the age of 65, are the least crash-prone age group. However in that age group the KSI (that is killed and serious injury) rate is highest. This is quite likely due to elderly drivers and passengers not being able to withstand the impact and the resultant decelleration forces as well as younger road users. Currently, theoretically, anyone in possession of a driving licence can continue to drive until they drop dead. This is obviously not a satisfactory situation. The risk of a driver having a stroke or heart attack in the over 65 age group is greater than for younger drivers. We've all heard of RTCs (road traffic crashes) in which a vehicle lost control as a result of the driver having a medical problem. There should be a more robust system of control other than simply obtaining a doctor's signature in order to continue to drive. If an elderly individual needs or wants to continue driving above, say 70 or 75 years old then they should have to have a check up by their doctor. This could be repeated at suitable time intervals, perhaps every 5 years in order to ensure that they remain physically able to continue without becoming a risk to other road users and themselves. My mother continued to drive into her 90's and only gave up when she was diagnosed with Age-related macular degeneration. SHe had been complaining of glare in winter early mornings (when the sun is low) and difficulties driving at night. [She is now 102 and still going strong] It has been proposed that older drivers tend to travel slower than other ages and have contributed to crashes because of hogging the middle lane at 60mph or less on motorways. I don't think this is supported with factual analysis but the RAC have embarked on a study on this very issue. I rather think that type of behaviour is found with hesitant drivers of all ages. I, personally would not be averse to having to have a medical in order to drive. I had to have an annual medical to continue scuba diving under BSAC rules over the age of 50. I am due a couple of cataract operations later this year so should have improved vision for that very purpose. The test would have to assess the applicant's general health and assess the likelihood of having a stroke or heart attack. How this would be based I am not sure but possibly on cholesterol levels and general lifestyle (i.e. smoking, drinking, eating habits, etc), The test should include a quick check on reaction times, stress levels and general physical well-being. I'm now going to cause more panic by concluding with my continuing proposal to improve road safety in the UK. If such a system of testing elderly drivers is introduced then I would also like to see a change in the process of becoming a driver in the first place. I have long maintained that the system whereby a candidate taking the driving test can continue to take tests until they at long last eventually obtain a pass. There are those who took not just a few attempts but maybe perhaps 20 or 30 attempts to pass. For someone to take that many would indicate to me that they are just not cut out to have the necessary skills to be a safe driver. There is nothing worse than having a jittery or stressful drive r on the road. They are liable to make irrational judgements and to panic in emergencies. Driving is probably the most complex multi-tasking activity that anyone will undertake in their lifetime and it has to be acknowledged that there is quite a high proportion of the population who just are not capable for this operation. My proposal would be to permit 3 attempts at the driving test. If the test is not passed within these 3 attempts then that person will never be able to obtain a driving licence. We have a level of deaths and injuries as a result of RTCs in this country which is not acceptable. For a "civilised" country is an appalling waste of life and resources. At the last count, the cost to the country is about £19 billion per year and that does not include the congestion costs that RTCs create. Currently the government does not see fit to include targets for reduction in their transport "policy" which I consider to be reprehensible. The UK is the only European country that does not have official national targets [Highways England, who are responsible for the motorways and trunk roads have their own targets] If UK was to invoke the 5 Pillars of Road Safety as defined by the UN/WHO we would have targets but somehow the DfT think we can do the job without these! End of rant!!ViewDate:
