Gallstones - have you had them?My sister had hers removed years ago, and she was fine when I went to see her the same evening. I don't know how long she had waited for the operation though. She did seem to put on a lot of weight after, but I'm not sure if that was the cause.ViewDate:

Health and fitness bank accountsI agree with your post entirely, and have actually used the description you have used re bank account, making deposits and withdrawals. Being self aware can be so beneficial to your mind and body, and to put certain things in place on a regular basis should be as important as showering or cleaning your teeth.ViewDate:

When do you stop buying Christmas presents for nieces, nephews and godchildren? In theory I agree with you, and I've been trying to reduce my present list for several years mainly because I just don't know what to buy people. Times have changed and people buy what ever they want for themselves. I just seem to get dragged into buying for more people every year because they start to buy me something, and its embarrassing if you have nothing to give them. If you find the answer to this please let me know.ViewDate:

University versus Work ExperienceI know a huge amount of professional people without degrees myself included. We will agree to disagree on this one I think.ViewDate:

University versus Work ExperienceHow long is it since you lived in the UK may I ask, because I have to disagree with you. I know absolutely tons of people who have managerial positions and have not had a university education. I myself came from a working class background and had very basic schooling at a secondary modern school, and it didn't hold me back. I find personally that people with degrees have notched up huge debts and then find it difficult to get the positions they were hoping to. Employers are looking for more than a degree now they are looking for hard working, ambitious individuals with a good work ethic, who also have attributes that would make them valued by the company.ViewDate:

Where we all live!!!!I was born in Bradford I hate to admit as it isn't very nice in most parts now, and it is very rare I go there. Saltaire though is very nice, and a very famous place known for Salts Mill, the beautiful Saltaire United Reformed Church opposite, and the many houses in the village built by Sir Titus Salt in the 1800s for his mill workers. I've seen the Hockney exhibition you speak of although I'm no expert...I would say your comments had little to do with your divorce lol !ViewDate:

MEMORIESYes. But I've become soft in my old age and have the heating on without hesitation. Our house was quite big with high ceilings when we were kids. It was warm if you sat near the coal fire but freezing at the back of the room. We thought it a luxury when we eventually had gas fires fittedViewDate:

MEMORIESNot seen this post before and it brought a smile to my face...happy days. Not sure the 1 bath (shared) a week was very hygienic but it did us no harm, and I do remember thick ice on the inside of Windows and my sister showing me the art of dressing in bed.ViewDate:

Christmas TV Adverts - are they better now ?Think I've only seen the John Lewis one so far this year, and I love it. I notice you have a dog in your profile pic, which looks like a German Shepherd. I have had 2 of them..such lovely dogs but not seen as much these days. I can't remember Sainsburys last year. I'm a sucker for all the Christmas movies and adverts though.ViewDate:

Where did teenagers come from?Ah yes I thought I would revert to adding pics via my laptop, as you must all be fed up of laying down to view my recent ones. I can't keep up with your changing photo's however, as to silliness I find it more entertaining than silly, so please continue to be yourself. Absolutely lashing it down here, but I agree the autumn colours are very beautiful.ViewDate:

Where did teenagers come from?Oh I was definitely a teenager, and quite rebellious and sulky at times...then like a fool I married at 17 years old so I didn't have much time to enjoy any freedom. I remember having several jobs lined up for when I left school at 15 ...there was no shortage of work. I think that because like others I was brought up with very little in the way of luxuries I appreciated how going out to work afforded me nice things and I still appreciate everything I have. Lionel your post describes very well how things were. As to my grandchildren well my daughters 2 children are encouraged to do jobs for the extras they want and do have paper rounds or Saturday jobs and they have 2 parents who teach them a strong work ethic, but they do also have a large amount spent on them at Christmas and birthdays. My son is separated from his daughters mother and unfortunately she gets everything handed on a plate and does not know how to do basic chores. It's difficult to get the balance when raising children as you don't want them to stand out and be the ones with no fashionable clothes or the latest gadgets, but on the other hand you want to teach them that money for such things has to be worked hard for. I feel sorry for the young ones of today though, because I think you have to go through hard times to fully enjoy the good. Also how on earth are they going to get onto the property ladder if their families can't give them a helping hand ?ViewDate:
