Is the constant quest for equality eroding the archetypal gender differences? With the Dr Who position now filled, will all those who wanted an actress in the role now pressure the creepy-crawly PC BBC to appoint a man to chair Women's Hour and Wild Women programs? Goose and gander......?ViewDate:

Is the constant quest for equality eroding the archetypal gender differences?Having been involved at various times with publicity/marketing disciplines I tend to view adverts with a very critical eye ......good ones and bad, and there is definitely an increasing trend in reversed gender characteristics....especially were family matters are covered. Men are generally now shown to be clumsy, foolish, incompetents, clowns, victims of kids pranks, easily manipulated and otherwise quite helpless and hopeless. ....Men are tolerated or not really necessary. Women, however, are shown as strong-willed, able decision makers, no nonsense pragmatists, sensible and forthright etc. and all softened with a large dollop of "love and caring and glamour." Publicists know the need to flatter female ego's to buy goods and services with the message that only women have the common sense to be the main family driving force. Advertising works......ViewDate:

Was life in the past preferable to today?I tend to agree .... this question is surely too broad and open to answer specifically. From the posts here we first think in terms of what hardware and material things we have now as opposed to our youth...... when we were young did we really miss having a washing machine or an indoor toilet or television or the NHS etc...... were we miserable because such things hadn't been invented? I think the question should be "Where we happier then, or now." This should be given much thought and not answered off the cuff, because one should think back to specific periods in ones life.....say, later school years, teenage years, 20-30. and so on. And of course it all depends on your age now. I was born in 1934 so WW2 and the subsequent years of austerity is a factor in my life....but not in many others. Even so, I don't like the world as it is now in fact I hate it, and whilst life was harder I was generally much happier then.ViewDate:

Clever uses for ice cube traysChopped chillies frozen in portions are a very convenient way of adding to winter stews or any other "hot" recipe.ViewDate:

Should National Service be reintroduced in the UK?As an ex National Service (1950) sprog I now find this topic somewhat puzzling because society has changed so much, particularly with regard to gender characteristics. Whilst we automatically think of forced conscription as for males only, surely in this new age of so-called female equalisation where women emulate men more and more...... in speech, attitudes, swearing, boozing, loutish behavier, job aspirations and so on, then conscription should apply to all young females too. Isn't that fair and reasonable? The downside, of course, is that this would lead to an upsurge of teenage pregnancies as a means of avoiding call-up ! The two years I spent in a RAF control tower didn't teach me a useful trade so I consider that as a complete waste of time at a most crucial period of a young persons career, training and prospects.ViewDate:

Should the State Pension be means tested? Can anyone explain to me, at what point regarding a persons assets/income/savings etc. does one become .... rich, or ("just comfortable") and should therefore be penalised by having their state pension reduced or withdrawn? And more, does anyone know of a politician or civil servant mandarin who has the skills or management savvy and common sense to make a sane and fair judgment on this issue?ViewDate:

Your last mealFirst, a dry sherry followed by the very finest top quality battered cod and perfectly cooked chips and mushy peas......and I'm hyper critical on the cooking of these simple items. To finish, a small mountain of sublime orange liquor crepe suzettes. Finally, a large slug of my favourite single malt ......what a way to go!!
