Back In the Day

Just reminiscing of days long gone past.  We were so lucky back then to have our freedom as children, I feel.

Back In the Day

Back in the day, when I was a child
With so much to see, my mind running wild
The weekend would come, outside I would run
To meet up with friends and have lots of fun

We’d go to the park and jump on the swings
Fly high in the air, as if we had wings
All crammed on the roundabout, how fast we would go
I’d jump off and push if it started to slow

The beast of all slides, so high in the air
With the heat of the sun on my derriere
But boy how we loved to run up the slide
Once at the top, down quickly we’d glide

We’d think nothing of taking babes for a walk
Some were so young they couldn’t yet talk
Could you imagine the uproar today
If we dared to do things from back in the day

We’d go out on our bikes and be gone for hours
Ride in the sun, the rain, and the showers
With no mobile phones we really were free
The best of adventures for you and for me

We’d play on the building sites; we knew that we shouldn’t
But no grown ups around to say that we couldn’t
We’d get up to mischief wherever we went
But we were so lucky, such precious time spent

Now scrumping for apples, blackberries, and plumbs
Was oh so rewarding, and good for our tums
We’d pick them for hours, hands sticky and stained
But our love of this pursuit still hasn’t waned

We may not have been rich, but how happy were we
With fresh air in our lungs and our minds running free
Those days are long gone but our memories will stay
Of the great fun we had, back in the day
