Life in the Valley

Life In The Valley

Years spent at the bottom of a valley;
Striving hard to scale the rocky sides.
Groping blindly, trying to find a foothold
To start the long, unsteady, upward climb!

Progressing gradually but sure I’ll make it:
Confident the summit I will reach.
Avoiding every loose or falling boulder:
Determined not to give way to defeat!

Arising from the depths within the valley;
An arms length distance left to reach my goal
But obstacles around me are surmounting
And again into the valley I must fall!

I’ve lived for many years within this valley:
The ravine built of heartache, ruled by men.
A realm of constant fear, and pain and heartache.
A place where only women dare to dwell!

Does fate intend I never leave this valley?
Will the hand of destiny be poised to strike
Each time I take a step and move on upwards?
Will the unknown force forever drag me back!

As a survivor of domestic abuse I found writing down my inner thoughts in the form of poetry to be an exellent therapy which aided my recovery greatly. I am fully aware abusive behaviour in a relationship can come from both sides, therefore I apologise that my poems on the subject are aimed solely at the male species. This is mainly due to the fact that they are based on my own personal experiences, and not on life in general. I am pleased to say that once I had purged my system of the bitterness I held towards my perpetrators I could go on to write poetry on various other subjects; which I hope some of you will enjoy reading!
