Playing with Fire

Playing With Fire

Life can be one long and constant battle
For those, like me, who never cease to learn
That playing with fire can only lead to heartache;
With scorched emotions searing as they burn!

The smouldering coals ignite and take hold quickly:
Flames circling our bodies like a cloak.
With stinging eyes we strive to find an exit
But cannot see beyond us for the smoke!

Our cries for help unanswered and unheeded,
We shout and scream as panic starts to grow.
The passers-by may glance in our direction
Then turn their heads, for they don’t want to know.

As time goes on the pain is gently fading:
Memories, like tiny scars, remain
But then, we see the fire so enticing,
And, once again, reach out –
To touch the flame!

As a survivor of domestic abuse I found writing down my inner thoughts in the form of poetry to be an exellent therapy which aided my recovery greatly. I am fully aware abusive behaviour in a relationship can come from both sides, therefore I apologise that my poems on the subject are aimed solely at the male species. This is mainly due to the fact that they are based on my own personal experiences, and not on life in general. I am pleased to say that once I had purged my system of the bitterness I held towards my perpetrators I could go on to write poetry on various other subjects; which I hope some of you will enjoy reading!
