Are you worried that other people are not following Covid rules?

Despite the repeated messages from the government to stay home, protect the vulnerable and avoid all unnecessary travel, it’s clear that not everyone is adhering to the coronavirus guidelines.

If you’ve spent months avoiding seeing family and friends, it can be frustrating to enter a supermarket and spot someone shopping without a mask, or to hear about an acquaintance bending the rules to visit other households.

And knowing that some people aren’t getting behind the national effort can quickly cause anxiety about the spread of the virus and what the future holds.

While you can’t control what others do, experts say you can learn to influence your emotional response to rule-breakers.

Find out how to keep calm and carry on here.

Everyone should be doing their bit to stick to the rules, and if you’re seriously concerned about a breach of the latest government guidance in the UK, you can find out how you can report the incident by visiting police.uk.

Do you think the rules are clear? Are you worried that other people are not sticking to the Covid rules? Have you been rigidly following the Covid rules yourself? We’d love to hear your views.

How worried are you that other people are not following Covid rules?

This week on UK TV it was revealed that 1.2 million illegal immigrants were estimated to be in the UK.
These are people who have arrived here from a variety of different countries and canot register, so do not wish to put themselves forward for Covid testing for fear of being discovered. Possibly not speaking or understanding the english language do not appreciate the dangers here.
This seems to indicate that lockdown or any other schemes would make total control of the virus very difficult.

It does worry me that people are not sticking to the rules of social distancing. There is always an excuse which really upsets me. Personally I think that the Government should clamp down heavier. It also makes me cross when the Government keep changing their minds. People do not know where they stand.
I am disabled and don't really go anywhere but I still bide by the rules, Some have said I am over cautious but can you be?

It makes me angry when I see people congregating in large groups in the middle of town centres especially when they are not socially distanced and none of them wearing masks. It would appear that they seem to think that they will be immune to catching COVID. I also think that all shops should take action on those that walk around with no masks on. I don't feel it's enough that they have sanitiser at the entrance, they should ensure that people in the shop wear their masks all the time they are in there and not around their necks. It's a shame that the minority not sticking to the rules are probably prolonging the spread of COVID.

It makes me angry to read about people having parties and holidays when I’m sticking to h9me deliveries and unable to see my family. I know it’s a minority who are not abiding by the rules but it is worrying because they are probably prolonging the covid sanctions.

I also worry that we are pinning our hopes on vaccines. If we are becoming increasingly vaccine dependent, is that a sustainable solution?

It's a pointless exercise worrying about what others do as if you had a headline 'invisible sniper loose on the streets' you'd still get the arrogant and stupid wandering around and then crying when they got shot! I don't need nannying by officials to know there's danger on the streets and I need to be sensible.

Does anyone know what happens to the fines that are collected from the "ravers etc " who have defied the rules ?
Does it go into the police tea money box, or towards boosting the expenses of some MP's ??

Don't let it control my life but it is damned annoying, still do most shopping online as there are numerous people in supermarkets still wearing masks just on their chins. There are also an increasing number sporting obvious fake exemption lanyards.

Another thing we have noticed are families meeting up in the middle of the countryside where they think nobody will see them. My son cycles out every day and he says he often sees 2 or 3 cars parked up with several families all with flasks and food. They have had to move inland to do this now as they know the police are patrolling beauty spots and the coast itself.

I am fed up with people not following the rules but have now made up my mind to stop worrying about them and just keep myself safe. On Xmas Day a house near me had 16 people from 5 households round for the day. Their neighbour told me and I asked why she didn’t report them and she said “would the police do anything?”

Another neighbour told me there are people from London living at an isolated cottage where she walks her dog but they come into the village to shop. She says she won’t report them because someone reported a similar incident and the police said there was nothing they could do as they were inside the property.

The police have stepped up their presence here in Norfolk and have turned some people back to their primary residences but they are missing a lot of people.

Two hoots, the problem is the police do not have the resources to be everywhere at once. I have a number of my friends who have children in the police force and they are trying their hardest, but are also expected to deal with crime, road accidents, etc. and are left feeling they only get criticism from everyone. They have been spat on, abused both physically and verbally and know that they are damed if they do and damed if they don't. No wonder a number are considering leaving the force.

I agree with you one hundred percent. People come into Cornwall to there second homes and basically get away with it. There are loads of complaints going in to the Council and Police but you never hear about what happens. The Government should ban second homes (lol). No it won't happen but I bet this virus would be so widespread if they did. We have had a campervan down from London to go surfing!! There were also people from the East down rock climbing at Dartmoor.

At the beginning of the first lockdown, most people took it seriously and adhered to the rules, and I simply felt concerned about the minority who ignored the restrictions. Now, however, I feel really angry at those who flout the rules and even deny the very existence of this killer virus. I cannot understand how anyone can deny either its existence or its severity when so many people have died, and continue to die, all over the world. Even with the vaccines we still have a lot to learn about this new virus and it is beyond foolish to dice with death, especially when there are still so many unknowns. It also shows a lack of respect bordering on contempt for the hundreds of NHS staff who have already lost their own lives in their fight to save so many of us. I have lost a much loved aunt and uncle already and am terrified for the lives of the rest of my family, many of whom have underlying health issues, some of which are severe.

Now that the Chinese have agreed at long last [ after some 12 months ] to let the UN inspectors into their country under strict escort, to see more and establish where the Copvid first started. No prizes for guessing what the results will be after 12 months of hiding the truth away.
The exploitation of precious metals by the Chinese in Africa and Brazil meaning that personell are travelling back and forth between these two areas can only mean one thing, and ...hey presto.

Cloud, Covid-19 belongs to the Coronavirus family that has been around for a long time. Many of them can cause a variety of illnesses, from a mild cough to severe respiratory illnesses, the latter includes SARS and MERS. Covid-19 is one of several known coronaviruses to infect humans but has probably been around for some time in animals. Sometimes, a virus in animals crosses over into people and that’s what is thought to have happened here. First being identified in Wuhan City, China, so the virus isn't new to the world, but it is new to humans.

so we ate animals with the viruses? How did the viruses reach people, that live in remote places, who just eat what they grow and raise their own animals to eat. These people don't go to markets, don't go to the cities , don;t go on planes, stay with their own small communities. Some people got real sick. cloud

Cloud, the virus is believed to have developed in a Chinese market and their average market tends to be very large and housed in one area and use by most people. This virus is not ingested, it is a respiratory one spread by droplets but if an animal viruse mutates it may cross the non-human animal/human barrier. Bearing in mind scientists estimating that 3 out of every 4 new or emerging infectious diseases in people come from animals, it is easy to see how Covid-19 could have occurred. However, it takes better people than me to say this is zoonotic in nature.

As to how would it spread to remote areas, it only needs one person in a remote community taking their produce to market, or a relative who lives in a city visiting their family, for the virus to be introduced to the community.

I’m in a village where the small shop is vital for us and do a great job keeping us going. It’s visitors who seem to ignore mask wearing, and local children.
I was in the shop recently and three young teenagers came in behind me... without masks. I knew who they were and commented that they ought to be wearing masks and the instant reply was “F**k off old man.”
I bit my tongue and said nothing! I was genuinely shocked. Unbelievable

Our local Co op has a sign saying We will not ask you to wear a face mask. We know if you are not, then you have a good reason. So in effect nobody if they don't wish to, has to wear a face mask. Most are sensible but I've seen some that I know who have no valid reason, not wearing one. Probably one of the worst decisions the government made was to attribute the public with common sense.

I am concerned that large stores that also have a food shop within are allowing people to clothes shop etc.
To my mind it goes against the directive about only shopping for essentials, and in some instances is actually encouraging people to break the rules, from hearsay I understand that one particular store had staff operating tills on just the clothes side of the store, it is very wrong on so many counts...small shops have to close but these giant names carry on regardless.

I live in Cornwall. Before Christmas we were in Tier 1 and I did not know anyone who had had the virus, During the Christmas period lots of people came down here from other areas, including those in Tier 4. Since then the virus has really taken off in this area and our numbers are increasing alarmingly. Myself, partner and 4 members of my family are currently recovering from Covid!

I completely understand your point of view, SueG. It's much the same here.

I'm the other side of the country, north Suffolk. We live in a tiny hamlet of less than a dozen homes while there are just 29 houses in the civil parish. It's a widespread farming community.

When lock down was declared last year the villages around us just filled to bursting with folks with cut glass accents and thier wider families. Of course, they brought their city habits with them. This year was much the same. First mention of a lock down and they all arrive again to their picturesque thatched cottages and supposedly English cottage gardens.

Before lock down was announced a few weeks ago our infection rate was the lowest in the country bar Cornwall. Now?

We've been second highest for two weeks. It angers me these incomers may barge into shops without a mask, treat our shop worker friends in a surly manner while stripping the shelves of goods we locals wanted to buy. The booze shelves are worst. Empty! (I don't mind, I don't drink), Our hospitals are now filled with Covid cases such that there was barely space for my 85 year old next door neighbour to be left to die. Yet no one yet knows of a Covid case among us locals. Therefore such cases must be incomers, city people fleeing the mess they've made in the cities.

I've been on Surfers for about five years; I think I have a reputation of being a little right wing - shoot first and don't waste time on questions. In these remote parts we're a law unto ourselves and that has worked well for many generations. I've no reason to suppose anything will change in that regard.

Ah bless, and hope all get well soon. I get my shot tomorrow and I have been getting very scared, disgusted and afraid when out shopping.
Just two weeks ago when I was shopping along our very small and narrow side shops a woman brushed past me on my mobility scooter.
And, I estimate that roughly about 40% of all people out and about in our local town are not wearing masks, and not following the distancing rules. And this is my observations for over December and January.
How many more will have to die because of these morons.
Not just in Sainsburys etc., I suggest that it becomes mandatory for everyone in any public area have to wear masks.
Take note Boris!

At a recent Parish Council meeting we were advised of the number of lockdown breaches in our two small villages. A few people on my village FB page are getting very aggressive in their posts, saying that they will cause a big problem if asked to mask up, no-one can make them, it's not the law etc. We are staying home and getting stuff delivered to keep away from these idiots. It's obvious by the amount of traffic on the roads compared to the first lockdown that people are not following the rules. People seem to have 'essential jobs' that they have to go to every day that they didn't have before. People don't all wear masks in shops and go unchallenged. I've seen drunks going home at 11.30pm - where have they been?
Either Boris is being badly informed if he thinks people are following the rules or he's burying his head in the sand. It's very sad.

ChristineC24, I don't think Boris actually cares. He never does anything about anyone in his own party who break the rules, what message does that send? The rules are ambiguous, change on a regular basis and are not following the advice his own scientists's are suggesting.

Naysayers continue to flaunt the rules as they think it is all a conspiracy to control them, the young believe they are immune and then there are those who refuse to wear a mask or isolate etc. as it breaches their human rights. As to those who say it's only the flu suggests they have never had the flu!

Don't get me on the subject of peoples reaction to the vaccine...

Treetop, I certainly wouldn't have wanted Corbyn, and I agree Boris is doing this best, unfortunately he isn't particular good at anything. Most of his team are inexperienced and have no clue as to what they should be doing other than agreeing with Boris. Even his Health Minster has no clue as to how the NHS works,The experts with knowledge of viruses and disease control, advise but their advise tends to be ignored until things go wrong then Boris has another U turn but finds someone else to blame. Billions have been wasted on non- tendered contracts, all of which have gone to friends and large contributors to the Tory party and most having no experience of producing what they have been contacted to do. I accept he was only interested in the role and was unlucky to be pushed into the middle of a pandemic, but he appears unwilling to learn from others, this is a pandemic after all, never listens and does appear to have put profit before people. No government is perfect, but history will see this government as one of the most incompetent and self serving governments of all time.
