Is it right to share the private tapes of Princess Diana?

August marks the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death, sparking a flurry of new documentaries and think pieces on the beloved ‘People’s Princess’.

Among the most controversial television specials was Diana: In Her Own Words. The documentary, aired last week by Channel 4, revealed private tapes of Diana in candid conversation with her voice coach Peter Settele.

The tapes were never intended to be seen in public and have been the subject of lengthy legal battles.

Friends and family of the Princess of Wales were strongly opposed, saying it was a “betrayal of her privacy”.

On the other hand, Channel 4 said the documentary gave Diana a voice. It featured her speaking candidly about everything from her upbringing to her courtship with the Prince of Wales, her public life, and troubled marriage between 1992 and 1993.

Viewers, too, have been deeply divided – some felt it was positive to see Diana speaking openly, in her own words, about her life and the challenges she faced.

Others believe it is time to stop combing through her private life in search of new details the public will potentially find fascinating.

What are your views? Do you think it’s right to share the private tapes of Princess Diana? Or is it time to leave this subject to rest? Should the public know more about the Royal Family – or less?

The woman has been dead 20 years, I never cared for her and don't now. I do care that close family members of a deceased person should be allowed privacy. It's just decency.

We are just a lot of busy bodies always craving the private goings on with other people. I didn't particularly enjoy Diana's lifestyle and her attention seeking BUT 20 years on, this was unkind to her and her family. Leave her alone - rip Diana.

I never understand why people watch these kind of programmes it is a bit like people to stand around taking pictures with their mobile phone when a tragedy has happened. The lady had problems she is dead cannot answer back leave her alone. I .have never watched any of the programmes channel 4 make and never will.

I feel real empathy for this wonderful lady, During her life and now 20 years later.
Not one person can judge whether it is right or wrong for the TV historical programs to be aired, sharing very private details of Diana.
However I am mos definitely sure that the the most valued sons in her life would have prevented any such coverage if they did not want to allow it.
We and I mean every breathing person living in this world must understand the greatness of Diana, not only did she suffer at the hands of her very selfish, self absorbed , spoilt brat of a husband, Prince Charles but she also gave birth to two fantastic boys. As the mother she was both boys would not be who the are today. The pain and sorrow they still live with an especially Prince Harry addressing his own personal mental ill health post losing his mother is so very real.
One is not defined by ones work or job title or public status, we are all defined by are daily living, breathing, family, friends and empathy for everyone around us.
When reading the news and watching the terrible terrorists attacks world wide by extremists, this is the real truth as to what is going on in this world..Politics as far as I am concerned all boils down to religion and law since the dark ages.
Monarchy for this country followed politics religion and law and what better choice than a true blue blooded wonderful girl , Diana to provide are Monarchy with its best future King, William.
But what transpires is the lack of support for this mother Diana form her direct family, the Windsors side and even her own mother.
Having had a very similar life, adultery from the start without my knowledge marrying an important figure in his work, I did the same as Diana, smiled and kept my chin up. If Lady Diana were alive today she would still feel that pain. I is said she found love but back to politics or rather religion and law, her last passionate day spent alive was with a man no one in the royal family would like at all, discounting her sons. William has proved that no one will dictate his choices in life, he married Kate, another wonderful lady.
I do not believe Diana died due to an accident, I still can not believe the Paris Hospital embalmed her before she could be returned home in her home the UK for a full detailed investigation.
The tunnel should have been closed for longer, interviews today are to late. Why did she not have full security, she is the mother of 2 royal sons, how can that family live with that when there are members of the Royal family receiving huge yearly payouts for what?
I loved and respected Lady Diana foe all her life and for what she gave the world, the changes she made in negative attitudes to full on positives was and remains remarkable considering her heart was being broken daily.
Her sons are a credit to her and continue with her work and with great respect to them both keep doing what your doing and Harry marry for love just like big brother.
My message to Camilla, it is a very huge sad revelation that there are women like you around, sloppy seconds, gold digging, vile, selfish and totally destructive. I feel so very sorry for you ex and your children. Watching you arrogantly joining during Royal events an smiling like an angel makes me feel so sad for you, you did not gain or have world wide respect for your adulterous behaviour, you and women like you do not get the wrath of any religious or lawful punishment, funny that ??? you were an over sexed, extremist predator where Charles was concerned,,offered on a plate. The Royal family allowed your marriage, why the hell did you not just do it the first time round instead of crippling the most amazing young lady, Diana,,,silly me ...back to Royal blood, religion and law...funny how it does not apply now..Diana dying made that happen too.
For all you No people, mental ill health throughout this world is due to covering up traumatic events in peoples lives, it is time to face the real truth and not just about Diana but all things going so badly wrong in this world, how many of you No folk empathise with Diana and her 2 boys ?? It is not a bad thing to remember a life or allow others to come forward to express the effect it had on their lives, the people closer than you or I.
And on that note do you also say No to William and Harry talking together and going through their photo album, and Harry raising awareness of how he had deal with his mothers death???

Respect is a word used less and less and just because she married royalty does not mean she does not deserve it. Privacy and respect now is important for her boys.

I do not think the tapes should have been shown and agree with others that Diana should be left to rest in peace. However, it seems a strange subject to practice speech with a vocal coach. There are two sides to every story and only one side is ever heard. Although she taught her boys a lot they said on their own documentary recently that they spent half of their time with her and half with their father, so he also had a part in their upbringing. They have accepted Camilla into their lives so why can't members of the public. After all no knows what goes on behind closed doors. The close friends and pals who tell stories can't be genuine otherwise they would keep things to themselves.

I agree with most commenters, the tapes should not have been broadcast. But the fact they were begs a couple of questions ...

Was the broadcast scheduled to coincide with press reports the Queen is preparing for Charles to be Prince Regent? Diana did say she would do just anything to prevent her errant husband ascending the Throne.

The fact these tapes were made - they are rather explicit and devastating to the House of Windsor - strongly suggest Diana planned for them to be released for broadcast. Why else make such recordings, and to a voice coach? She clearly wasn't merely putting on record a few lurid facts of her marriage, no, she exposed far more of the workings of the House of Windsor than was healthy for her.

We've so often heard Diana was hounded by the press. Yes, she was but it has to be said, she was the mistress of manipulation of the press when her need arose.

In respect of the succession, the worthiness of a person is not taken into account. It is their seniority in the line to the Throne. Right now Charles is the heir to the Throne.

However, there are a few impediments here with might disqualify him. He married into a Catholic family, and no Catholic may come near the Throne in Law.

He is divorced and re-married, both forbidden in the Canon of Church of England Law. Although under Welby it has become a very fluid, rather amorphous institution I doubt he may get around this one with ease.

That divorce precludes him from becoming the hereditary Head of the Church of England. His remarriage to a Catholic further disqualifies him.

Further, I rather think at Christmas 2003, when he stormed out of Christmas lunch with his parents at Sandringham and flew back to Camilla at High Grove, he had been brought to a precipice by his Mother and Father. The Throne of Great Britain or Camilla - you can't have both! I think also an official document had been prepared and Charles signed away his claim to be Heir Apparent in favour of marrying Camilla.

We must take account of how the Queen has been bringing on William these last few years, guiding him into the kingly role. She's been making him the acceptable face of monarchy, youthful, modern, a family man and quite other to the person his father is in popular perception.

I think the clue is in the title "Private Tapes". I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theories on her death but do believe her sons deserve better than having her private life dragged up time and again.

We should let her rest in peace. We will never know the truth surrounding her death but I still believe one of the royals was behind it. However it is 20 years ago now and we should let the matter drop. However, I would not like to see Camilla as queen or consort. Think William and Catherine should be the next king and queen.

I think it is high time we let Diana rest in peace. She was never left alone in life but it has gone on for too long. We should think of her boys who want to remember their mum and the happy times they had together, not be constantly reminded of the bad times.

Are they ever going to let the poor woman rest? Picking over every little detail is nauseating frankly, the woman is dead, leave it be. The media used to say that to guarantee sales all they had to do was put Diana on the front page - what's the matter are they trying to boost revenue?
People really don't want it all over again, it was a sad episode in history but enough!

in my opinion it is totally wrong that the "gutter press" are doing this with no thought for her boys or the Spencer family . who ever commissioned this to be aired on television needs to have a damn good word with themselves what happened to respect for those that have passed away .

I don't think they should be airing there dirty washing, there.s been enough said and done already, they are a high profile family ,at the end of the day these are those boys parents and I would presume they love them both, it must be distressing to see all this brought back in the media,I think enough is enough, let there mother RIP. When you look back over the history of the royals this has been going on for generations. I just wish them all well for there futures. I also think we will never no the real truth of this tragic story.

They used to say in the old days " never wash your dirty linen in public."
I find it disgraceful that the gutter media has allowed this to be broadcast and for the press to gnaw at it like a never ending bone of revenue for them.
Her sons are trying vainly to deal with the loss of their beloved mother.
Follow the money and the power behind these broadcasts I always say. Who is instigating this and for what reason?

I don't think it is fair to keep bringing these issues back into the public eye after all these years . No one knows what really goes on behind closed doors. As with any divorce or breakdown of a relationship all parties contribute. It must be devastating for her two sons who loved their mother. Just let her Rest In Peace and let her sons keep there memories of their beautiful mother intact.

I do question why these tapes were recorded in the first place. Surely a professional voice coach would only record their client reading from a set text e.g. a poem or a piece of prose or perhaps giving a speech so that the client's phrasing, intonation, pronunciation etc could be discussed and improved upon. I did not watch this programme so cannot comment on the content of the tapes but I do wonder if the Princess deliberately stage-managed the whole process in the hope that her side of the story would eventually reach the public domain. There's no denying that she was a breath of fresh air at the palace and did much to publicise Aids and Land Mines and all the other charities which she was connected with but, if we are to believe all that has been published and televised, neither she nor Prince Charles behaved well in their marriage and in my opinion after twenty years this controversy should just be laid to rest. Not forgotten because it is part of the history of the monarchy, but constantly raking up new stories and gossip cannot be good for either the Windsors or the Spencers or the future of our monarchy which HM The Queen has strived faultlessly for, for the last 65 years.

If the recordings were for private use only then they should not be aired. I am wondering why she would choose to have these conversations with her voice coach knowing that they were being recorded, surely she would have realised that once made they were open to airing. I am not sure that there is such a thing as privacy among public figures and celebrities. A lot of them open up their lives for everyone to see then complain when people comment. Overall I do not think any content should be aired, shown or distributed without consent
