The Best of Sir Paul McCartney

Sir Paul McCartney turns 77 on 18th June – and though he’s well into what many of us might call ‘retirement age’ he shows no signs of slowing down.

The enduring success of his band, The Beatles, means McCartney is one of the best-known figures in rock music today.

Born and raised in Liverpool, McCartney was the spark that ignited the band; he met George Harrison in 1954, and then later at the age of fifteen, met John Lennon while playing in another band.

Over the next several years, Ringo Star would join the band and by January 1962 they had their first hit – Love Me Do. After The Beatles disbanded, he found success again, both with his band Wings and as a solo artist.

In honour of his birthday, today we’re looking back at some of his best songs through the post-Beatles years.

Are any of your favourites on our list?

Hello Rachel - I would love Paul's "Pipes of Peace" to be "put out there again" - especially with the big national divide over Brexit. A lot of young people especially are still upset and outraged that we are leaving the EU and after such a lot of investment that has gone into us joining Europe over the past 40 years - they still would like us to remain in and certainly still "be friends" and not rivals - which we will inevitably become again if we leave. My father who was born in 1898 was in the 1st World War trenches in France at the age of 16 and spent those precious years of his youth in the mud on Flanders fields - losing family and friends around him. I am so thankful that my own son and grandsons have never been called to war. This is needed as a much needed reminder that we must always been friends. June Sherwood (maidmarion)
