Benefits of exercise for the over 50s

If you’ve not read one of my Silversurfers partnership blogs yet, hello and nice to meet you!

I’m Julie Ford and at the age of 65 I invented Instepp – an innovative exercise aid that adds resistance while you walk or sit.

They say 50 is the new 40, but I think we all know that ten years can certainly make a difference to one’s energy levels and that our bodies need a little more encouragement to feel ten years younger.

The benefits of exercise for the over 50s are well documented, including:

  • Enhanced wellbeing and vitality
  • Improved mobility
  • Toned muscles
  • Increased social interactions
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Improved mental health
  • Stronger bones
  • Alleviates menopausal symptoms

…to name but a few!

I’ve been a personal trainer to many clients in their 50s and can tell you for sure that it is hugely important to incorporate movement into our daily lives as our bodies age.

You may be someone who loves to move, with high stamina and a strong body who can’t get enough of those feel good endorphins. If this is you then I’d like to gift you this full body Instepp workout, I hope you enjoy it!

If you do not fall into that category, fret not. There are many people out there who don’t enjoy regular exercise for various reasons; be it lack of time, confidence, mobility, money or motivation – it can be hard to start a new habit when it seems far away.

With this in mind I’d like to introduce you to the idea of exercise snacking. That’s right, snacking!

The idea of exercise snacking is that you incorporate functional movement into your day and end up completing a workout almost without noticing.

Examples of exercise snacking:

Wear your Instepp whilst watching your favourite television programmes in the evening. Each time there is an advert break, get up and either Instepp around the room until the programme returns, or Instepp your way into the kitchen and back when you make yourself a cup of tea. Before you know it, based on a 1 hour programme you would have done approximately a 12 minute workout! This can also be done seated if you wish (check out the seated Instepp workout on my Youtube channel).

If you work at a seated job, why not pop your Instepp on for your working day (it clips neatly to your clothes so that your hands are free while you work) and then Instepp while you take your rest or lunch breaks?

The benefits of these small exercise snacks soon add up, without feeling scary at all!

This Instepp exercise snacking video will show you more.

I am so excited to welcome you to the Instepp community. If you would like to to get more involved with us then please drop me a message to discuss my 1-2-1 classes, Instepp retreats and the Instepp ambassador scheme: [email protected]
